About this Senior/Semi-Senior WordPress Developer & Web Publisher role at Focus Digital
Position Overview
We are looking for a hands-on Web Developer with a real programming background who can own the development, publishing, performance and technical optimization of client websites. Most of our work runs on WordPress, with a growing number of Shopify stores and, increasingly, custom-coded sites using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and modern frameworks such as React, Next.js and Astro.
This is an implementation role, not a strategy or content role. You turn briefs, designs and content into fast, technically sound, conversion-focused pages, and you keep them healthy. You are expected to use AI tools to work faster, but you need to understand the code and the concepts well enough to direct them, review their output and fix what they get wrong.
You will work closely with content strategists and project managers. We are not looking for someone to design SEO strategy or write content. We need someone who implements SEO, tracking and performance correctly and builds with good judgment.
Key Responsibilities
WordPress (primary)
- Update and maintain WordPress sites and pages: ACF, custom templates, theme modifications and page builders (Elementor Pro, WPBakery, Divi) when needed.
- Implement new sections, templates and layout variations from briefs, wireframes or existing design systems, writing clean HTML and CSS by hand.
Shopify (growing)
- Build and maintain Shopify pages, sections and theme changes using Liquid and JSON, including schema-driven editable sections.
- Support custom logic for templates, product and collection layouts, and landing pages.
Custom code (growing)
- Build and modify custom-coded pages and components with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and work in modern frameworks such as React, Next.js and Astro.
- Read, understand and safely modify existing codebases, not just generate new code from scratch.
Performance
- Keep pages fast: compress and correctly size images, use modern formats and lazy loading, reduce render-blocking resources, and improve Core Web Vitals and Lighthouse scores.
SEO implementation
- Apply on-page SEO at the implementation level: titles and meta, heading structure, internal links, schema and JSON-LD, and Yoast or Rank Math configuration.
- Use tools such as Lighthouse, Screaming Frog and Ahrefs to find and help resolve technical issues.
Analytics and tracking
- Understand the basics of Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager, and configure and validate event tracking (form submissions, key clicks, conversions), or know how to direct an AI tool to do it and verify the result.
Content formatting and QA
- Turn Google Docs and content outlines into clean, conversion-optimized pages with clear hierarchy, spacing, CTAs and media.
- Review published pages for formatting, responsiveness and performance, and test across devices and browsers.
Requirements
What we are looking for
- A genuine programming background: you write and understand HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and can work in at least one modern JavaScript framework (React, Next.js or Astro).
- 4+ years of hands-on web development experience, with a strong track record in WordPress (ACF, theme edits, custom templates, page builders).
- Shopify experience with Liquid and JSON, or proven ability to ramp up quickly on a new stack.
- A portfolio of live sites you can walk us through, explaining exactly what you built (code and/or CMS). Links required.
- Solid design and UX judgment: spacing, hierarchy, contrast and responsive behavior, not just following a checklist.
- Working knowledge of performance optimization: image compression, Core Web Vitals and Lighthouse.
- Working knowledge of SEO implementation and of GA4, Search Console and Google Tag Manager basics, or the ability to direct AI tools to configure them and verify the result.
- Comfortable using AI tools responsibly to work faster, while understanding and reviewing everything they produce.
- English level B2 to C1 (comfortable working with an international, English-speaking team).
- 3+ references (full name, company, role, email and/or phone, and dates from and to).
Nice to have
- Experience in a fast-paced agency with multiple concurrent clients.
- Headless WordPress, Webflow or Framer experience.
- Familiarity with Asana, Jira or Teamwork.
- Basic Figma or Photoshop for resizing and exporting assets and handling SVGs.
Benefits
- Salary of $2,500 - $2,700, depending on experience
- 2 Weeks of PTO
- Fully Remote
Compensation
- Salary range: $30,000–$32,400, commensurate with experience
This is a full-time position focused on web development across multiple client accounts.
