About this Senior QA Automation Engineer role at Chubb Fire & Security
Role: Senior QA Automation Engineer Role Summary: The Senior QA Automation Engineer will act as the strategic quality owner for the organization’s customer-facing web and mobile applications. This is a hybrid engineering position that requires a balance of high-level code-based automation and deep-dive manual investigation. You will be responsible for defining the quality strategy early in the development lifecycle ("shift left") and deciding the optimal mix of automated vs. manual validation. While your primary objective is to build scalable automation frameworks for Web (Angular) and Mobile (Flutter), you will also perform targeted manual exploratory testing to validate complex user journeys, UI/UX nuances, and edge cases that scripts cannot capture. You will have the authority to greenlight or block deployments based on objective quality metrics and user experience standards. Who we want to work with: We are looking for more than just a skilled QA engineer for this role - we are looking for someone who will act as a true leader within the team. The nature of our work requires individuals who can navigate ambiguity, make sound technical decisions, and take ownership from idea through to delivery and beyond. This role is not about waiting for perfectly defined requirements or relying on constant direction; it’s about actively shaping solutions, contributing to the direction of the platform, and driving meaningful outcomes. By combining strong communication, healthy scepticism, and product awareness, you will help ensure we build the right things in the right way - balancing speed, quality, and long-term value. Ultimately, we want someone who doesn’t just deliver code, but who elevates the team, influences decisions, and plays a key role in building a scalable, globally aligned platform. You are comfortable with ambiguity ▪ You can tan take a vague problem and turn it into concrete steps. ▪ You ask clarifying questions but don't get blocked by missing details. ▪ You make reasonable assumptions AND document them. You show Strong technical judgement ▪ You always try to avoid overengineering AND under engineering a solution. ▪ You know when to choose a simple implementation versus something scalable. ▪ You can explain trade-offs clearly (i.e. performance vs complexity, implementation speed vs maintainability). You show ownership & accountability ▪ You own each solution all the way through to completion (edge cases, rollout, monitoring). ▪ You take responsibility when things go wrong. ▪ Everyone makes mistakes – you learn from them. You take the lead and can act independently ▪ You make progress without constant check-ins. ▪ You are confident in owning your decisions. ▪ You know when to escalate versus when to push through and retrospectively inform us of what was done. You are an excellent communicator ▪ You can articulate half-formed ideas and refine them collaboratively. ▪ You can explain technical concepts in plain language ▪ You know when to respectfully push back when something doesn't make sense You show healthy scepticism ▪ You challenge assumptions. ▪ You avoid blindly following specifications or industry trends. ▪ You can suggest alternative ideas and solutions and more importantly, articulate your reasoning. You have product awareness and own the platform ▪ The impact to the end user is the first thing you think about when making a change. ▪ You are to grasp the business context and align to our business goals. ▪ You focus on the outcome, not just on the output. Key Responsibilities Strategy & Framework Architecture • Hybrid Quality Strategy: Define the end-to-end testing strategy, determining the most effective ROI for automation versus manual intervention. Own the release quality and establish the metrics required to validate deployment readiness. • Automation Frameworks: Design, build, and maintain scalable automation frameworks for Web (Angular) and Mobile (Flutter) to maximize regression coverage and enable rapid release cycles. • Requirements Engineering: Partner with Product Owners during requirements gathering to identify "fuzzy" requirements. Define precise Acceptance Criteria that serve as the blueprint for both automated scripts and manual test charters. Automation & Manual Validation • Exploratory & Manual Testing: Execute rigorous manual testing for new features, specifically focusing on complex mobile gestures, visual layout stability, and user experience (UX) flows that require human intuition. • Cross-Platform Validation: Ensure a consistent experience across iOS, Android, and modern web browsers through a mix of automated execution and manual spot-checking on physical devices. • API Testing: Perform comprehensive testing of backend .NET Web APIs using tools like Postman to ensure data integrity and logic correctness, independent of the UI. • Defect Management: Manage the defect lifecycle within Azure DevOps Boards. Manually reproduce complex bugs to provide clear logs and screenshots, ensuring engineers have exactly what they need for a fix. Integration & Operations • DevOps Integration: Integrate automated test suites into Azure DevOps build pipelines. Monitor test results within the CI/CD workflow and collaborate with engineers to resolve build failures immediately. • Performance Validation: Utilize tools (e.g., JMeter, K6) to validate application stability under load. Qualifications Education & Experience • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field. • Minimum of 5+ years of professional experience in Software Quality Assurance. • Proven hybrid experience: Strong background in coding test automation combined with a willingness to perform hands-on manual testing when necessary to ensure product quality. • Proven experience testing mobile applications on both iOS and Android. Technical Skills • Automation Tools: Strong proficiency in modern automation tools such as Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, or Appium. • Scripting: Competent in writing clean, maintainable test scripts using C#. • Manual Methodologies: Proficiency in Exploratory Testing, Heuristic Evaluation, and Usability Testing techniques. • Mobile Testing: Experience testing mobile applications (specifically Flutter apps is highly desirable), including the management of physical devices and simulators/emulators. • API Testing: Solid understanding of RESTful services and experience testing APIs (status codes, response validation, authentication). • DevOps: Proficiency within Azure DevOps, specifically in integrating automation scripts into CI/CD pipelines and managing work items. • Database: Understanding of SQL for database verification and test data preparation. Language Proficiency • English: Advanced / Professional working proficiency (C1 level or higher) in both verbal and written English is mandatory for daily collaboration with international stakeholders. What We Offer • True Strategic Authority: You will not simply execute test cases handed to you. You will have a seat at the table during sprint planning and the authority to block releases if quality standards are not met. • Architectural Autonomy: You will have ownership over the selection of tools, the design of the automation framework, and the definition of best practices. We hire smart people to tell us how to build quality, not the other way around. • A "Shift-Left" Reality: We are committed to integrating QA into the earliest stages of development. You will work as a partner to Software Engineers and Product Owners, not as a bottleneck at the end of the sprint. • Complex Technical Challenges: This role offers the opportunity to solve difficult cross platform challenges, managing quality across a complex ecosystem of Web, Mobile (Flutter), and Backend APIs within a modern DevOps pipeline. • Valued Hybrid Approach: We respect the art of manual testing. We understand that automation handles repetition, but human intelligence handles quality. Your exploratory testing skills are valued just as highly as your coding ability.
