The Additive Manufacturing Process and Capability Center (AMPCC) encompasses a critical mass of Additive Manufacturing (AM) process and industrialization experts, the necessary equipment, and develops the strategic collaborations needed to rapidly mature the technology and manufacturing readiness of AM.  The AMPCC focuses on the research, development and deployment of additive manufacturing tools and processes for our business units. 

 

What You Will Do 

The Senior Principal Additive Manufacturing Design Engineer will be challenged with solving unique and interesting problems to enable new commercial aerospace and defense products.  They will be responsible for one or more of the following activities as they relate to the AMPCC, including: 

 

• Support RTX Business Units by providing design and FEA expertise to increase the rate of additive adoption 

• Develop, demonstrate, and document design methodologies and tools for additive manufacturing including conventional CAD and implicit modeling-based approaches 

• Identify Design for AM (DfAM) software tools and develop methodologies for automated interconnection of individual tools into a unified toolchain capable of operating on large, component-level scales 

• Identify novel multidisciplinary design analysis and optimization (MDAO) tools and develop strategies for toolchain integration 

• Topology Optimization for generation of geometries enabled by additive manufacturing across structural, thermal, or hydrodynamic domains 

• Execute DfAM projects to support business unit adoption of additively manufactured components and systems 

• Establish relationships with government, industry, academic, and RTX Business Units and lead development of whitepapers, project concepts, and responsive proposals 

• Manage multiple design, development, and demonstration projects 

• Summarize and communicate results of key programs to executive management 

 

 

Qualifications You Must Have 

The preferred candidate should have a strong understanding of engineering principles and hands on experience working with laboratory equipment.  Candidate must be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, collaborative team environment focused on innovation and have demonstrated both verbal and written communication skills including: 

 

• Typically requires a University Engineering Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years experience 

• 5 year minimum experience with CAD (Siemens NX preferred) for mechanical design and product engineering 

• 3 year minimum experience with finite element analysis (e.g. Ansys, Abaqus, COMSOL) 

• 5 year minimum experience using advanced scripting experience with CAD tools, Matlab, Python, VBA, JavaScript or similar 

• 3 years minimum experience with implicit modeling tools such as nTop including development of custom blocks 

 

 

Qualifications We Prefer 

• Preferred candidates for this position will have PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field. 

• Experience solving complex multi-objective systems engineering problems  

• Working understanding of AM processes including laser powder bed fusion

The salary range for this role is 132,400 USD - 251,600 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.
