Your role and responsibilities

In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to ABB's success through technology, product, and system development in power electronics. Each day, you will apply your expertise independently and as part of a cross-functional R&D team, identifying and implementing innovative solutions for demanding switching applications.

The work model for the role is: #LI-Onsite

In this role, you’ll help run what runs the world by taking on meaningful work that drives real impact, as you will be accountable for:

  • Designing and developing advanced power electronic systems for Solid State Circuit Breakers, including semiconductor stacks, gate driver circuits, and protection schemes for DC applications.

  • Conducting circuit-level and system-level simulations to evaluate SSCB performance across diverse operating scenarios, including fault conditions and transient events. Contributing to thermal analysis and power loss estimation to support the thermal design and long-term reliability of SSCB hardware.

  • Selecting and qualifying power semiconductor devices (IGBTs, MOSFETs, SiC/GaN) and passive components, including collaboration with suppliers for technical validation.

  • Leading prototype development activities: building hardware demonstrators, defining test plans, executing functional and safety validation, and analyzing results. Troubleshooting complex hardware and design issues during development and post-deployment phases, implementing effective corrective actions.

  • Supporting PCB layout design using Altium Designer, with focus on insulation voltage, signal integrity, and EMC compliance. Preparing detailed technical documentation, design reports, and test procedures throughout the full product development lifecycle.

  • Collaborating closely with mechanical and electronic engineers, layout designers, and testing teams to ensure integrated and timely delivery of development milestones.

  • Sharing technical knowledge, best practices, and design guidelines with the broader engineering team.

  • Driving the achievement of assigned targets (quality, time, scope, cost) while proactively identifying and addressing technical risks.

Qualifications for the role

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Electronic Engineering, with a focus on Power Electronics. At least 5 years of professional experience in power electronics design and development.

  • Proven expertise in power semiconductor devices (IGBTs, MOSFETs, SiC/GaN modules and discrete components), including thermal and electrical characterization.

  • Knowledge of power conversion topologies (DC/DC, inverter, rectifier) and advanced switching techniques for DC applications.

  • Hands-on experience with thermal and electrical simulation tools such as PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink, LTspice, Ansys Maxwell, Icepak, or SIMetrix.

  • Experience with PCB design and layout optimization. Familiar with Altium designer or equivalent and PSPICE simulator or equivalent

  • Practical proficiency with laboratory measurement equipment: digital oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, impedance analyzers. Familiarity with numerical computation and scripting tools such as MATLAB and Python

  • Experience in Solid State Circuit Breaker (SSCB) design, DC power applications, and advanced power semiconductor technologies, including SiC MOSFETs and GaN devices is preferred

  • Knowledge of power semiconductor reliability, IEC/UL standards for DC protection and switching equipment, and experience working in agile R&D environments; publications or patents in power electronics are considered a plus

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision, driving complex tasks to completion within an agile team environment.

  • You are at ease communicating in English
