About this Senior Developer role at NAB

NAB · Hybrid · BNZ Place Auckland, 80 Queen Street

Worker Type:

Permanent

Here at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions through our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."

We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. There is the opportunity for growth, learning and career development. No two days are the same.

The Transactions & Investments domain sits at the core of BNZ. We look after platforms that support everyday banking, customer accounts, investments and the movement of money safely, reliably and at scale. Our focus is on keeping core banking stable and resilient today, while modernising the technology that supports BNZ’s future digital banking ambitions.

We are looking for a Senior Developer to join the Transact Term Deposits team (aka Transformers), supporting our Term Deposits capability on Temenos Transact as we continue the transition from programme delivery into a sustainable build and run model. The team works across Transact Term Deposits, business service APIs that connect Transact to the BNZ environment, production support, operational readiness, performance testing, monitoring, release support and ongoing capability uplift.

This is an Auckland based hybrid role. Anchor days in the office are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

We sat down with the People Leader who you will report to, and they told us the following about the role:

What are day-to-day tasks the person in this role will complete?

  • Design and Build Quality Solutions: Design, develop and maintain reliable, scalable and easy-to-understand solutions, applying sound engineering principles and considering maintainability, performance, testability and operational reliability throughout development.
  • Build Quality into the Code: Write and maintain unit and integration tests as part of feature development. Use appropriate automated testing practices to improve confidence in changes and contribute to effective test coverage across the solutions you build.
  • Contribute to Testing and Quality: Bring a quality-focused mindset to development by considering appropriate test coverage, identifying gaps and working with the wider team to ensure solutions are effectively validated. Experience with test automation and an understanding of risk-based testing and test-pyramid principles would be valuable.
  • Own Features and Manage Risk: Take ownership of well-defined features and technical problems through to completion. Identify technical and quality risks early and build resilient and observable solutions.
  • Investigate and Solve Problems: Break down moderately complex technical problems, troubleshoot issues across application and system layers, analyse code, logs and system behaviour, and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Support Production: Contribute to production support and on-call activities, helping maintain system reliability and respond effectively to operational issues.
  • Collaborate and Continuously Improve: Work closely with teammates and cross-functional partners, contributing ideas, sharing knowledge and identifying opportunities to improve how the team builds, tests and supports its solutions.
  • Integration and Transact Development: This role includes typical integration development activities, with opportunities to develop and configure Temenos Transact.

What is the team culture and environment like?

Our team has a collaborative and supportive engineering culture, where people are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions and take ownership of their work. We value open communication, continuous learning and knowledge sharing, with everyone contributing to the quality and reliability of the solutions we build.

We work together to solve problems, learn from feedback and continuously improve how we deliver. We value respect, diverse perspectives and shared ownership, creating an environment where people can grow their capabilities while delivering meaningful outcomes.

What experience is required for this role?

We’re looking for a Developer with strong software engineering capability and a focus on building reliable, maintainable solutions. Ideally, you’ll bring experience with:

  • Modern Java and Spring Boot, with a strong understanding of software engineering principles and best practices.
  • Designing, implementing and maintaining enterprise RESTful services and event-driven architectures.
  • Writing unit and integration tests and building automated testing into the development lifecycle.
  • Test automation and test design, with an understanding of appropriate test coverage across different system layers.
  • Docker and container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes.
  • Cloud technologies, particularly AWS.
  • CI/CD and infrastructure tooling, such as Jenkins, Spinnaker and Terraform.
  • Observability and application monitoring, using tools such as Splunk and Dynatrace.

Some hands-on experience with test automation and testing practices would be highly valued. You don’t need to be a Test Engineer, but you should be comfortable thinking about how the software you build can be effectively tested and how automated testing can improve quality and confidence in delivery.

What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?

  • Strong Engineering Fundamentals: Applies solid software engineering principles to build solutions that are reliable, maintainable, performant and easy to understand.
  • Ownership and Initiative: Takes ownership of well-defined features and technical problems, working with increasing autonomy while recognising when to seek input or escalate.
  • Quality and Reliability Mindset: Builds quality into their work through good engineering practices, automated testing and code reviews. Thinks about testability, appropriate test coverage and risk while designing and developing solutions, and considers resilience, observability and operational health.
  • Practical Problem Solving: Breaks down moderately complex technical problems into achievable tasks, applies sound judgement and uses code, logs, system behaviour and test results to diagnose issues and identify effective solutions.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Works effectively with teammates and cross-functional partners, communicates clearly and constructively, and contributes positively to the team environment.
  • Continuous Learning and Improvement: Seeks and responds to feedback, looks for opportunities to improve their own capability and the way the team works, and shares knowledge through collaboration, documentation and mentoring.
