About the role

Take the lead on complex data challenges and help build trusted data products that support better decisions for our customers and team.

As a Senior Data Engineer in our Data, AI, Loyalty and Analytics team, you’ll combine hands-on engineering with technical leadership. Using Python, SQL, dbt, Apache Airflow and Snowflake, you’ll design reliable data pipelines, models and reusable solutions that enable enterprise reporting, self-service analytics and emerging AI use cases.

We’re building the best...Our team makes it happen.

This is an individual contributor role with genuine influence. You won’t have direct reports, but you’ll guide engineering decisions, coach others and help strengthen how data solutions are delivered across Bunnings. You’ll be supported to test ideas, share knowledge and keep developing, with a team culture focused on Inspiring you to give it a red hot go.

What’s involved

You’ll work across product and delivery teams to turn complex or evolving requirements into data solutions that are practical, scalable and easy to support. Along the way, you’ll have opportunities to:

  • Lead the design and delivery of trusted data products for reporting, analytics and AI initiatives
  • Build production-ready pipelines and reusable transformation frameworks
  • Design dimensional, Data Vault and semantic models that make data easier to understand and use
  • Make clear technical decisions across performance, cost, security, quality and reliability
  • Improve automation across testing, deployment, monitoring and recovery
  • Solve complex pipeline, performance and data-quality issues
  • Strengthen documentation, lineage, observability and operational readiness
  • Work with architects, engineers, BI developers, data scientists and business stakeholders
  • Coach engineers through pairing, peer reviews, design guidance and knowledge sharing
  • Identify opportunities to simplify the data environment, reduce technical debt and improve developer productivity

Your work will help teams access consistent, reliable information while supporting better experiences for customers and colleagues.

About You

You’re an experienced data engineer who enjoys staying close to the technology while helping others do their best work. You can bring structure to ambiguity, weigh technical trade-offs and explain your recommendations in a straightforward way.

You’ll join a cross-functional team where open communication, practical problem-solving and shared ownership matter. You’re comfortable challenging ideas constructively, listening to different perspectives and building alignment around solutions that can be reused across the organisation.

You care about engineering quality, but you also understand the importance of delivering value at pace. Curiosity, sound judgement and a willingness to share what you know will help you thrive in this role.

What you’ll need

  • Significant experience in data engineering, ideally seven or more years
  • Advanced capability in Python, SQL and dbt
  • Strong hands-on experience with Apache Airflow
  • Experience designing and delivering production data solutions on cloud platforms such as Snowflake
  • Strong knowledge of dimensional modelling, Data Vault and modern data architecture
  • Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, observability and source control
  • A track record of diagnosing complex data and pipeline issues and improving production reliability
  • Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers and influencing cross-functional stakeholders
  • Understanding of data governance, quality, lineage and metadata management
  • A relevant qualification or equivalent practical experience
  • Exposure to Power BI, retail data, machine learning or AI-enabled analytics would be useful, but isn’t essential
