About this Senior Cloud Backend Software Engineer role at GEA

GEA · Onsite · Belfast

Responsibilities / Tasks

At GEA Farm Technologies, we know that tomorrow’s dairy industry will be measured against the highest sustainability standards. Our goal is to become completely CO2e-neutral by 2040—including the use of our products by our customers, not only our offices and production sites. To achieve this, we support farmers with reliable and effective digital solutions.

Our digital farm-management solutions provide valuable insights to customers worldwide. As a Senior Cloud Backend Engineer, you will help build and operate the cloud platform behind these solutions. You will join an experienced development team at our Belfast location and collaborate with colleagues across disciplines and locations.

 This is who we are

  • We are part of the GEA Digital Hub and focus exclusively on developing digital solutions and services.
  • Our internal developers work in teams with external colleagues and specialists from different disciplines.
  • We develop and operate digital management and monitoring solutions for customers in the dairy industry.
  • Our technology stack includes Java, Spring Boot, Azure, Terraform, PostgreSQL, Redis, Azure Service Bus, Event Hubs, IoT Hub, Key Vault, Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, Nexus and SonarQube.

 That’s why we need you

  • Collaborate across teams on architecture, system design and technical direction to ensure a cohesive software landscape
  • Build integrations and asynchronous workflows using cloud messaging and data services.
  • Provision and evolve Azure infrastructure using Terraform, and contribute to CI/CD and production operations.
  • Champion security, reliability, performance, maintainability and automated testing.
  • Apply high standards of code quality and effective engineering practices.
  • Support other engineers through technical guidance, code reviews and mentoring.

Your Profile / Qualifications

  • You have a degree in computer science, comparable professional training or equivalent practical experience.
  • You have strong professional experience building production backend services with Spring Boot, preferably in a Kubernetes environment
  • You have hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure and infrastructure as code using Terraform.
  • You have experience deploying cloud-native applications with Docker and are familiar with Kubernetes and Helm.
  • Design and develop secure, reliable backend services and REST APIs for our cloud-based digital platform.
  • You have worked with PostgreSQL and have a good understanding of query performance and database layouts.
  • You have experience with asynchronous messaging, for example Azure Service Bus or Event Hubs.
  • You understand API and application security, including OAuth2, JWT, identity management and secure secrets management.
  • You bring a senior-level approach to system design, reliability, automated testing and code quality.
  • You take ownership of your work and contribute actively to the development and operation of cloud services.
  • You communicate effectively across teams and enjoy supporting and mentoring other engineers.
  • You have a good command of English and are generally willing to travel occasionally, including internationally.

Please note that this role is based in Belfast and requires a hybrid working arrangement. Candidates should be located within a commutable distance of the office.
