Senior Backend Engineer

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join Smartly in Mexico City and help build the systems behind creative automation for some of the world’s largest brands. As part of our 250+ person Product & Engineering organization, you’ll design scalable services and infrastructure that help customers turn ideas into high-performing campaigns across markets and channels.

You’ll work on data-intensive backend systems, platform integrations, and increasingly AI-driven workflows that help customers generate, adapt, and optimize creative at scale. You’ll have meaningful ownership of the systems you build, collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Engineering, and help other engineers grow through technical guidance and shared best practices.

What You Will Do

• Own the design and delivery of new platform integrations from definition through production and ongoing operation.
• Design, build, monitor, and improve data-intensive backend services and distributed systems that support complex customer workflows at scale.
• Build reliable APIs and data pipelines with a focus on scalability, performance, maintainability, and operational quality.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and designers to turn customer problems into clear technical solutions and product experiences.
• Make thoughtful technical decisions and trade-offs while maintaining a strong focus on customer value and sustainable engineering practices.
• Contribute to team practices including technical planning, retrospectives, design discussions, and collaborative problem-solving.
• Coach other engineers through technical discussions, feedback, code reviews, and the sharing of engineering best practices.

What We Are Looking For

• Strong backend engineering experience using modern technologies such as Node.js and TypeScript.
• Experience designing, building, and operating robust distributed web applications and backend services.
• A solid understanding of scalable system design, APIs, data-intensive services, and the practices required to run production systems reliably.
• The ability to take ownership of complex technical work and make pragmatic decisions that balance quality, maintainability, and delivery.
• A customer-focused approach to engineering, with an interest in understanding the problems behind the features you build and delivering meaningful value.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills, including the ability to support and coach other engineers.
• Ability to work from our Mexico City office one day per week.
