Job Description:

This job is responsible for defining an architectural vision and solution that supports the strategic outcomes of the Business' Products and Services. Key responsibilities include defining the target operating environment, designing for client resiliency, assisting with solution design, and defining non-functional requirements. Job expectations include working with stakeholders and service providers aligned to the Business' strategic objectives, evaluating the impact of strategic design decisions, and contributing to the architecture roadmap.

  • We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Chief Engineer (CE) / Architect to support the Core Technology Infrastructure (CTI) Application and Database Services organization in the strategy, architecture, design, and delivery of enterprise infrastructure services. This role is responsible for partnering with engineering, operations, architecture, and application teams to develop resilient, scalable, and secure infrastructure capabilities that enable business and technology objectives across the enterprise.
  • The Chief Engineer serves as a senior technology leader, engaging early in strategic initiatives to provide architectural guidance, technical oversight, and solution direction throughout the lifecycle of infrastructure projects. The role is accountable for ensuring technology solutions align with enterprise architecture standards, operational requirements, and the Bank's long-term technology strategy. Working closely with stakeholders across CTI, APSE, and CIO organizations, the CE develops a deep understanding of business priorities and translates them into scalable, supportable, and cost-effective technology solutions.
  • As a trusted advisor to executive leadership, the Chief Engineer evaluates emerging technologies, recommends strategic investments, and provides cost-benefit analysis to support technology modernization and innovation efforts. The role influences technology decisions across organizational boundaries and partners closely with Architecture, Engineering, and Operations teams to establish standards, drive consistency, and improve platform capabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Works across the business, operations and technology to create the solution intent and architectural vision for complex solutions and prioritize functional and non-functional requirements into a technology backlog to enable the technology roadmap and functionality to support evolving capabilities and services
  • Contributes to the creation of the architecture roadmap of defined domains (Business, Application, Data, and Technology) in support of the product roadmap and the development of best practices including standardized templates
  • Clarifies the architecture, assists with system design to support implementation, and provides solution options to resolve any architectural impediments
  • Facilitates solution driven discussions, leads the design of complex architectures, and finds creative solutions through knowledge of domain, practical experiments, and proof of concepts while ensuring architecture is flexible, modular, and adaptable
  • Educates team members on the technology practices, standardization strategies, and best practices to create innovative solutions
  • Supports the team as needed to select the technology stack required for solutions and helps select preferred technology products
  • Performs design and code reviews to ensure all non-functional requirements are sufficiently met (for example, security, performance, maintainability, scalability, usability, and reliability)
  • The Chief Engineer provides end-to-end technical leadership for complex initiatives, proactively identifying and mitigating risks, resolving architectural challenges, and accelerating delivery outcomes. This individual serves as a senior escalation point for critical production and implementation issues, leading cross-functional teams through complex technical challenges when required. Additionally, the CE may participate in operational reviews, incident analysis, and strategic planning efforts to provide infrastructure expertise and ensure continuous improvement in platform reliability, performance, and operational excellence.
  • This position requires a strong combination of technical depth, strategic thinking, executive communication skills, and the ability to influence and lead across a large-scale enterprise environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Leadership Skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with a proven ability to build strong relationships across business and technology organizations.
  • 10+ years experience providing end-to-end architecture, design guidance, and governance for large-scale strategic initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams through complex technical challenges, balancing both tactical execution and long-term strategic objectives.
  • Skilled at translating product roadmaps, business goals, and technology strategies into actionable architectural solutions and delivery plans.
  • Experience managing staffing, financial planning, vendor engagement, risk management, compliance, and governance processes; Bank of America experience preferred.
  • Proven experience leading infrastructure production support organizations, ensuring operational stability, service reliability, and continuous improvement.
  • Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building skills across executive, business, and technical teams.
  • 10+ years experience designing, deploying, and managing highly resilient, scalable, and secure infrastructure platforms.
  • Proven expertise in architecting highly available network solutions leveraging load balancing, failover mechanisms, and enterprise firewall technologies.
  • Working knowledge of relational and NoSQL database technologies, including Oracle, MongoDB, CockroachDB, and PostgreSQL.
  • Extensive experience with middleware and integration platforms, including Apache, JBoss, MuleSoft, Kafka, Liberty, and WebLogic.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise data networking, connectivity, and distributed systems architecture.
  • Proven track record leading large-scale enterprise technology initiatives in architecture, engineering, development, and deployment leadership roles.
  • Experience designing and implementing cloud-native solutions across AWS and Microsoft Azure environments.
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices, including Terraform-based automation and provisioning.
  • Advanced experience creating architectural diagrams, solution designs, and technical documentation using Microsoft Visio.

Pay and benefits information

Pay range

$140,500.00 - $205,000.00 annualized salary, offers to be determined based on experience, education and skill set.

Discretionary incentive eligible

This role is eligible to participate in the annual discretionary plan. Employees are eligible for an annual discretionary award based on their overall individual performance results and behaviors, the performance and contributions of their line of business and/or group; and the overall success of the Company.
