ISP Upper School History Teacher Role Profile

Purpose of Role

An Upper School History Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, rigorous instruction in history to students (typically ages 11–18), fostering critical thinking, historical inquiry, and an understanding of past events and their relevance to the present. The role supports students’ academic growth, civic awareness, and analytical skills.

ISP Upper School History Teacher Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver well-structured history lessons aligned with curriculum standards
  • Teach a range of historical periods, themes, and geographical areas
  • Develop students’ skills in analysis, interpretation of sources, and argumentation
  • Assess, monitor, and report on student progress through assignments, exams, and feedback
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs
  • Incorporate a variety of teaching methods, including discussion, projects, and technology
  • Maintain a positive, inclusive, and disciplined classroom environment
  • Prepare students for internal and external examinations (if applicable)
  • Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum planning and interdisciplinary work
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians about student progress
  • Participate in school events, extracurricular activities, and professional development

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

Skills:

  • Strong subject knowledge in history and related disciplines
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to engage and motivate adolescents
  • Critical thinking and analytical instruction techniques
  • Classroom management and organizational skills
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and support varied learners
  • Assessment and data analysis skills
  • Collaboration and teamwork
  • Adaptability and creativity in teaching approaches

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in History or a related field (required)
  • Teaching qualification/certification (state teaching license, or equivalent)
  • Master’s degree in History or Education (often preferred)

Experience:

  • Prior teaching experience at middle or high school level (preferred)
  • Experience with curriculum planning and assessment design
  • Familiarity with educational technology and digital learning tools
