Summary
The student tutor conducts one-on-one or small group tutorial sessions in the area of writing for a variety of the content-area courses. The student tutor tutors a diverse population of undergraduate students in the Peer Tutoring Lab. The peer tutor works in the Lab in person for a minimum of 10 hours per week, Mondays through Fridays.
Essential Functions
1. Provides one-on-one and small-group tutorial services to a diverse population of undergraduate students. The tutor:
- Identifies students’ writing skills needs.
- Differentiates strategies and instructional materials to meet individual students’ needs.
- Assists student in understanding the material while fostering student autonomy.
- Engages students in tutoring sessions by utilizing active learning strategies.
- Motivates students by being an active listener.
- Provides positive feedback and makes recommendations for further study or practice.
- Respects students’ diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives.
2. Documents student work and progress by:
- Using the processes and systems established within the Peer Tutoring Lab to document student progress.
- Entering all data in a timely fashion as specified by the Glenn Hubert Learning Center’s Manager.
- Communicating with the Glenn Hubert Learning Center’s Manager regarding students with challenging or unique situations and documenting record details of such situations through the specified means within the Peer Tutoring Lab.
3. Participates in professional development and training sessions related to tutor responsibilities. The tutor:
- Maintains currency in writing by reviewing the course syllabi and relevant course materials.
- Actively participates in learning community meetings.
- Participates in mandatory training sessions throughout the semester.
- Maintains currency with technological resources for instructional and recordkeeping purposes.
- Monitors and makes arrangements for replenishment of consumable materials used in the tutoring environment.
- Develops and facilitates workshop/short videos related to writing.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Must be able to work a minimum of 10 hours per week consistently.
- Must be able to commit to working at least two consecutive semesters.
- Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be punctual, organized, professional, and courteous.
- Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
- Must have earned grade of an “A” in ENG courses.
- Must provide a professional faculty recommendation letter from the Biology department.
- Must be in good academic standing with the University.
- Must be enrolled full-time as a Barry University student.
