Job Description

The AS Project Student Assistant aids library users by performing detail-oriented special projects and maintaining a variety of different library resources. These projects are vital to keep the library accessible and well organized.

The Project Student is expected to work mostly independently and be able to provide regular updates to their supervisor and team. Students in this role must be available to work a minimum of eight hours per week, including weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs tasks related to the accessibility of library resources by accurately shelving discharged materials in the sorting workspace according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification system, creating appropriate book trucks for shelving, and shelving materials in the correct order in the stacks.
  • Uses the Library Management System (LMS) and public online catalog to locate and share information, make simple record edits, and identify errors for correction.
  • Performs shelf maintenance through shelf reading, shifting materials, making requests in library’s LMS, and creating reports . 
  • Processes requests related to holds and creates work orders for circulation review or mending. 
  • Able to assist with all loanable library equipment, such as DVD players, HDMI cables, laptops, etc. 
  • Processes materials, such as books, scanned chapters, and media for course reserves or digital item delivery services.
  • Answers initial user queries received in-person, via phone, or chat and refers specialized questions to the appropriate staff resource including assisting users with the use of library facilities and providing general information and directions. 
  •  Prepares items for return to their home location, such as Law, Music, Education Studio, etc. and delivers items to the locations as needed.
  • Maintains and provides access to reserve shelves. Including explaining policy and properly re-shelving materials. 
  • Performs building walkthroughs to gather occupancy data and report any issues/concerns back to the Access Services team member on duty at the desk or directly to the Head, Access Services or Head, General Services. 
  • Aids student staff and patrons for looking for items within the circulating collection and the periodicals area. 
  • Troubleshoots hardware and software problems with most library technology, including microfilm machines, printers, and public computers in all areas.
  • Able to assume responsibility for opening and closing tasks in the absence of full-time library staff which includes securing doors, turning lights on/off, confirming circulating equipment has been rehoused in its proper place, financial paperwork, and securing the cash drawer. 
  • Other duties assigned, including all Access Student Assistant responsibilities.

Skills and Abilities (in addition to AS Student Assistance requirements):

  • Proven ability to follow library policies and procedures while maintaining patron confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates dependable work habits including time management, organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills required and the ability to troubleshoot problems with printers, copiers, scanners, etc.
  • Ability to work independently (with minimal supervision), stay organized, prioritize assigned tasks, and respond to work demands.
  • Demonstrated mastery of library classification system through previous semesters worked.
  • Ability to bend and lift up to 10 pounds, with or without accommodation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly report on project progress and collaborate effectively with other student workers.
  • Ability to learn and demonstrate knowledge of navigating the library online system to assist patrons.
  • Willingness to lead other student workers on assigned duties and instruct new student team members on completing assigned tasks.

Pay Grade: SP Student 3, starting at $14.45
