Job Description

Position Summary:

The AS Student Assistant aids library users by providing general information and basic library fulfillment services that promote the educational purposes of UR students, faculty, staff as well as other users of Boatwright Memorial Library.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Public service and user assistance

  • Greet and assist library users in-person, by phone, and via chat; answer general questions and refer specialized or complex queries to appropriate staff.
  • Provide directional and facility-use assistance, including locating spaces and explaining policies..
  • Record non-transactional user interactions in LibAnswers.

Circulation and reserve services

  • Perform circulation transactions, including charging and discharging materials.
  • Maintain reserve shelves: explain reserve policies, process returns and reshelve reserve items in their proper locations.
  • Prepare items for return to their home locations.

Shelving and collection maintenance

  • Accurately sort and shelve discharged materials according to the Library of Congress classification system.
  • Create and prepare book trucks for shelving and ensure materials are shelved in correct order.
  • Perform shelf maintenance: shelf‑read, identify items with call‑number problems, and pull materials that require catalog updates or mending and place them in designated locations for next step processing.

Facilities, reporting, and safety

  • Conduct building walkthroughs to gather occupancy data and report issues or concerns to the Access Services team member on duty or the Head, Access Services, Outreach and Communications.
  • Assist with opening and closing tasks (e.g., securing classrooms, turning off lights/equipment) as assigned.
  • Keep current with and comply with University Emergency Response Procedures.

Technology and basic troubleshooting

  • Provide basic technical assistance for circulating laptops (including Microsoft Office basics) and the online catalog.
  • Troubleshoot common issues with public printers, workstations, copiers, and scanners.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and provide coverage for unscheduled shifts when needed
  • Ability to adhere to and demonstrate library policies and procedures
  • Able to adhere to confidentiality standards defined by University Library, University policy and the Code of Virginia
  • Ability to handle materials weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without accommodation
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Dependable work habits including attendance, punctuality, time-management, organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to perform at Library Access Services basic expectations and standards
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems with computers, printers, copiers and scanners based on provided training
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of navigating the library online system to assist users based on provided training
  • Basic knowledge of filing and Library of Congress classification system and previous library experience helpful

Hours per week:  minimum of 6                 

Work Hours: Between 7:30AM – 12:00AM

Pay Grade: SP Student 2, starting at $14.10
