The work
The SAP HCM Custom Object Developer is responsible for supporting the technical design, build, testing, and deployment of custom solutions within the SAP HCM and Payroll environment. This role requires strong hands‑on ABAP development skills and the ability to translate approved functional designs into scalable, high‑quality technical components. The developer will work closely with SAP HCM functional consultants, integration developers, and other technical resources to ensure custom objects meet business requirements and follow established development standards.
You will support the full development lifecycle—from reviewing functional specifications and creating detailed technical designs to executing unit tests, resolving defects, supporting integration activities, and preparing custom developments for deployment. This role requires strong problem‑solving abilities, an understanding of SAP HCM data structures, and the ability to collaborate across functional and technical teams.
Key responsibilities:
- Review functional design specifications and translate them into detailed technical designs
- Design, develop, and enhance SAP HCM custom objects using ABAP
- Develop and support custom reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, forms, workflows, and other technical components
- Collaborate with functional teams to clarify requirements and ensure technical designs align with approved functional specifications
- Perform technical/unit testing, code validation, and prepare solutions for functional testing
- Troubleshoot and resolve defects identified during functional, integration, regression, and end‑to‑end testing
- Provide remediation support through retesting and defect closure cycles
- Develop and maintain technical design documents, development specifications, and testing artifacts
- Support transport management, deployment activities, and production readiness efforts
- Collaborate with integration developers where custom objects connect to SAP or external systems
- Leverage SAP CPI / SAP Integration Suite where applicable, especially for integration-related custom solutions
Here’s what you need:
- 4+ years of SAP ABAP development experience
- Experience developing custom solutions within SAP HCM and/or Payroll environments
- Demonstrated experience building and supporting reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, forms, workflows, and related custom components
- Ability to interpret functional specifications and convert them into robust technical designs
- Strong debugging and problem‑resolution skills
- Understanding of SAP HCM data structures, technical architecture, and integration points
- Experience supporting development through all phases of testing and deployment
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially when working with functional and integration teams
- SAP CPI / Integration Suite experience is a plus, particularly with API‑based integrations and cloud integration flows

- Eligible to obtain a Public Trust clearance

The base pay range for this position in these locations is shown below.
