Main Responsibilities

We are looking for a Research Associate to join our team and cover Metals and Mining (M&M) research practice within the Commodities Global Analyst Team, based in Gurugram or Mumbai, India. As a member of our Metals and Mining team, you will contribute to our Iron Ore and Steel asset/cost research.

Your application should showcase your enthusiasm for the sectors we cover and demonstrate your ability in the following areas, which we require daily at Wood Mackenzie.

  • Research and data gathering – we identify and gather intelligence that feeds our industry expertise. We need inquisitive and passionate people with a keen eye for detail. Read and analyse company reports to find mine-level operational and cost datasets.
  • Analysis – we provide market-leading research using this data/intelligence and form opinions for and tell stories to our customers. We need people with natural curiosity with the potential to become experts in their field and with the ability to articulate – both verbally and in writing – clear, insightful analysis.
  • Internal engagement – we work with global colleagues across the Wood Mackenzie business to deliver a compelling, integrated view of the commodities sector to customers through our cutting-edge products. For this, we need people who are as comfortable working collaboratively as they are independently and who have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • External engagement – we proactively connect with our customers and contacts in the industries we serve, adding value and promoting the Wood Mackenzie brand. This requires people with the potential to become industry experts who have intellectual curiosity, passion, and excellent presentation skills.
  • Leadership/ Improvement – at Wood Mackenzie, we are committed to transforming the way we power our planet. The energy transition is here, and this impacts our customer base and how we serve them. We need colleagues with a change mindset, who are flexible, growth-orientated and proactive.

About You

You are passionate about the dynamics of the metals and mining assets, with a particular interest in iron ore and steel. You bring relevant experience, skills, or knowledge that will allow you to contribute meaningfully from day one. Your curiosity and analytical mindset will help deepen our understanding of iron ore and steel assets and strengthen our global research coverage.

  • Asset Analysis - as someone with an interest in steel and iron ore sector dynamics, you want to understand how these mining assets impact the natural resources industry. You will analyse mine production, reserves, cost and operational outlook trends across global assets. Your insights will contribute to regular research publications and working as part of a global team. This will include conducting asset valuations, updating asset reports, cost curves, cost models, and pricing analysis for iron ore and steel assets.
  • Data Interpretation & Insight Generation - You possess an analytical mindset and a keen eye for detail. You are comfortable working with large datasets, interpreting trends, and articulating findings clearly in asset reports. You will contribute to the development and maintenance of datasets, data models, methodologies and other intellectual property supporting our M&M research and products. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint is essential for presenting your analysis in a visually engaging manner.
  • Collaboration & Adaptability - You will be expected to operate autonomously while collaborating effectively across geographically dispersed teams. As you develop in the role, you will build deeper expertise across metals & mining assets and markets while strengthening your capabilities in research, data analysis, modelling, market intelligence, written and verbal communication, and client engagement.
  • Communication & Client Engagement - The role will also involve supporting client engagement by responding to client enquiries and ad hoc requests, participating in client discussions and presentations, and helping communicate Wood Mackenzie’s views and insights to customers and prospects. Through research trips, industry events and client interactions, you will develop an understanding of the key topics and challenges facing the metals & mining industry and incorporate these perspectives into our research.

Expectations

  • Growth mindset - taking the initiative to learn new skills, seeking out feedback and actively applying what has been learned in the workplace.
  • Change agility - maintaining high performance through disruption and change.
  • We are a hybrid working company and the successful applicant will be expected to be physically present in the office at least 2 days per week to foster and contribute to a collaborative environment. This is subject to change per company policy.
  • This is a full-time role.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Background in mining, energy, economics, or related disciplines
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
  • Prior exposure to commodity markets or consulting environments is advantageous

Diversity is at the core of our business and we welcome applications from a range of academic or professional backgrounds.
