Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY: The Rates Manager works with a team of analysts in tandem with the executive sales team to support the growth of new and existing business through statistics and data. The role requires advanced reporting and analytical skills with the ability to interpret data ensuring RFPs are executed timely. 

This position offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced Rates Manager to play a pivotal role in driving the company's pricing strategies and contributing to its growth and success in the highly competitive Transportation industry. 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:  

Key Responsibilities  

Pricing Strategy Development:  

  • Manage multiple analysts handling Fortune 500 RFPs for logistic services 

  • Ensure timely submissions of RFPs on an ongoing basis 

  • Time Management of analysts / sales personnel and prioritizing bids in house 

  • Responsibilities include day-to-day management of all pricing activities, troubleshooting, managing exceptions, as well as performing ad-hoc analyses to support strategic initiatives  

Market Analysis:  

  • Conduct regular market research and analysis to stay updated on industry trends, competitor pricing, and customer preferences. 

  • Manage a team that analyzes and implements pricing based on current market prices vs historical trends, company cost structure, business growth objectives and profitability targets 

Rate Negotiation: 

  • Communicate Negotiations with clients, vendors, and partners while maintaining healthy profit margins. 

Cost Analysis:  

  • Analyze operational costs, including fuel, maintenance, tolls, labor, and other expenses, to inform pricing decisions. 

  • Researching pricing discrepancies and reporting findings 

Collaboration:  

  • Work closely with the sales, operations, and finance teams to align pricing strategies with business objectives. 

  • Monitoring schedule of outstanding proposals through multiple rounds of pricing updates 

Data Management: 

  • Utilize Datawarehouse analytics and pricing software to optimize rates and monitor performance metrics. 

  • Utilizing overall knowledge of company bid-rate structure to complete pricing submissions against critical (and often narrow) deadlines set by customers 

  • Updating database with new and revised contract rate terms for both spot and fixed term pricing, and maintaining detailed records of completed agreements to include auto rating and customer lane master 

Documentation and Reporting:  

  • Prepare reports, presentations, and documentation outlining pricing strategies, profitability analysis, and recommendations for senior management. 

  • Generating recurring and ad-hoc reporting on national high-profile accounts, plus ability to summarize trends 

Compliance: 

  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations, customer contracts, and pricing policies. 

Continuous Improvement:  

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency in pricing methodologies. 

  • Writing complex queries and formulas as well as incorporating Microsoft Access or data warehousing software 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited 4-year university with a concentration that leans heavy on numbers/analytics 

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and market trends. 

  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills. 

  • Proficiency in utilizing pricing software, data analytics tools, and Microsoft Office Suite including advanced level of Microsoft Excel. 

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously. 

  • In-depth knowledge of transportation industry regulations and pricing strategies.  

  • 6+ years of analyst experience 

  • Proactive approach to researching 

  • Structurally organized and notes centric 

  • Experience summarizing results and producing reports using advanced Microsoft Excel functions 

  • Composed under pressure despite changing priorities and occasional interruptions 

  • Critical thinking and effective communication  

  • Highly organized and communicative 

  • Extremely personable and comfortable working closely with executive management 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Masters degree in Business Administration, Economics, Finance, or a related field (preferred). 

  • Proven experience (6 years) in pricing, revenue management, or a similar role within the transportation or logistics industry. 

  • Passion for numbers and understanding business   

  • Process-oriented 

  • KPI Reporting 

  • Power BI, Tableau or other data warehousing tools

6+ years work experience, 2+ years managerial
