Job Description:

Your Impact

Join Leonardo and play a key role in a critical national infrastructure programme that delivers radiation detection capability across the UK.

As a Radiological Detection Specialist, you will provide expert technical guidance on radiation detection technologies and help shape the future of detection capability. Working with customers, engineers, suppliers and specialist stakeholders, you will support important technical decisions and help solve complex operational challenges.

This role offers the opportunity to influence future capability by investigating emerging technologies, assessing their potential benefits, and recommending solutions that improve performance, effectiveness and resilience.

What You Will Do

  • Act as a senior subject-matter expert and technical authority for radiation detection, providing independent, evidence-based advice.
  • Assess the performance, suitability and maturity of current and emerging detection solutions.
  • Lead complex technical investigations, analysing incomplete or competing evidence to support significant technical decisions.
  • Work closely with customers, suppliers and engineering teams to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Support trials, evaluations and technology assessments.
  • Find opportunities to enhance existing capability through innovation and technological advancement.
  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Share knowledge and support the development of colleagues across the programme.

What You Will Bring

  • Extensive experience in radiation detection, measurement, or a closely related scientific or engineering field.
  • A strong understanding of ionising radiation detection principles and their practical application.
  • Experience assessing the performance of radiation detection technologies and interpreting technical evidence.
  • The ability to investigate complex problems, challenge assumptions and develop independent, evidence-based recommendations.
  • Experience working with customers, suppliers, engineers or technical specialists.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
  • A collaborative approach and a willingness to share expertise and support others.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in defence, national security, critical national infrastructure, emergency response or other highly regulated environments.
  • Experience conducting or assessing trials, evaluations or experiments.
  • Knowledge of a range of radiation detection technologies and their operational applications.
  • Professional registration, chartered status or membership of a relevant professional body.
  • A degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline, or equivalent knowledge and expertise gained through professional experience.

This is not an exhaustive list, and we are keen to hear from you even if you might not have experience in all the above. We recognise that the perfect candidate rarely exists. If you feel you meet around 80% of the criteria and are motivated to develop further, we would strongly encourage you to apply.

Security Clearance

This role is subject to pre-employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS).
