Key responsibilities


In this role, you will play a key role in shaping the technology, software and product development of the ABB Melody Controller platform and contribute significantly to its long-term success. You will provide technical direction for complex product topics, working closely with Product Management, Software Architecture and cross-functional engineering teams to translate business and product requirements into sustainable technical solutions.

As a senior technical expert, you will be a key point of contact within Research and Development for complex product-related topics, lifecycle challenges and critical customer and field issues. You will drive the identification, definition and implementation of innovative solutions while ensuring high standards of software quality, cybersecurity, maintainability and long-term product sustainability.


You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Technical ownership of the architecture and strategic evolution of the ABB Melody Controller platform, including software architecture, technology roadmap and modernization strategy, with a focus on maintainability, cybersecurity, backward compatibility and long-term business requirements.
  • Ownership of the software lifecycle, including management of technical debt, modernization of existing components, and ensuring cybersecurity, compliance and long-term maintainability.
  • Technical ownership of complex software features and enablers from requirements analysis and definition through implementation and product release, including industrial communication and fieldbus solutions as well as diagnostics, interoperability and system integration.
  • Technical support for complex customer and field issues and resolution of critical escalations in close collaboration with Service, Product Management and Business teams.
  • Ensuring and continuously improving software quality, configuration management, cybersecurity and compliance throughout the entire product lifecycle.
  • Technical leadership and development of the engineering team through coaching, mentoring and facilitation of technical decisions across team, product and organizational boundaries.
  • Active contribution to agile development planning, including PI Planning, Backlog Refinement and Release Planning, as well as prioritization of architectural initiatives, technical enablers and lifecycle activities to successfully deliver the product and technology roadmap.

Qualifications for the role

  • University degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a comparable field, with at least 10 years of experience in embedded software and firmware development for industrial automation, control or process control systems.
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++ and real-time operating systems, particularly VxWorks, combined with solid experience in developing complex embedded systems and long-lifecycle controller firmware, including architecture, implementation, troubleshooting, performance optimization and lifecycle management.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial communication and fieldbus technologies such as PROFIBUS, PROFINET, HART, Modbus TCP, IEC 61850 or OPC UA, with practical experience in their integration, implementation and diagnostics.
  • Experience with software quality, configuration management, compliance and cybersecurity for industrial software products, including hands-on experience with tools such as SonarQube, Black Duck and DSAC.
  • Experience in the technical specification, effort estimation and implementation of complex software features and enablers, as well as working with user stories and agile development processes, ideally in a SAFe environment.
  • Strong analytical, communication and technical leadership skills, with experience in coaching and mentoring development engineers and collaborating with global, cross-functional teams.
