The role: 

Our Engineering Automation Section is recruiting for a project surveyor to join our team! In this role, you will work collaboratively with others to support and promote the Delivery & Operations Division’s standards and expectations for right of way mapping and legal descriptions for conveyance documents. A day in the life:

• Coordinate with agency staff in response to work requests to determine limits of work, type and detail of maps and/or exhibits, expected budget and delivery dates.
• Make determinations regarding the width and/or alignment of the existing right of way.
• Advise other ODOT offices, state and federal agencies, local governments and the public regarding the location and extent of our existing property rights.
• Train consultants and region staff on division standards and expectations for right of way mapping and legal descriptions for conveyance documents.
• Coordinate the work activities required to prepare complex right of way and real property surveys and acquisitions.
• Ensure descriptions of real property legally convey the desired right and title to the state, local or public agency or private party.
• Review requests for an indenture of access rights or a grant of access rights.
• Prepare and oversee right of way engineering work products.
• Ensure right of way drawings conform to division standards, comply with state laws and recognized professional practices for land surveying and mapping.
• Prepare drawings and legal property descriptions.
• Maintain full and accurate right of way records.
• Serve as a technical resource and provide program support for right of way engineering.
• Establish and maintains professional and collaborative working relationships with all contacts.
• Work in an office environment with hybrid work options available and occasional travel required.

Minimum qualifications:

A valid professional land surveyor (PLS) license.

Note: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain professional registration in Oregon within six months of hire.

Special qualifications:

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid U.S. driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

• Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience delivering opinions, training and presentations on property rights issues.
• Experience using personal computers and computer aided drafting and design (CADD) software.
• Experience writing and reviewing right of way centerline property descriptions and sketch maps.
• Experience determining property rights through research, evaluation and analysis.
