About this Project Engineering Lead role at Maersk

Maersk · Onsite · Germany, Bremerhaven, 27572
APM Terminals

At APM Terminals, a global leader in port and terminal operations, we enable global trade and drive sustainable growth. What drives us forward is a mindset of always improving — observing how work happens, identifying what creates value, and removing what gets in the way. We constantly look for smarter, simpler, and safer ways of operating. If you thrive in environments where people value learning and are committed to continuously improve daily operations, join us and be a part of our journey.

About the project

APM Terminals and Eurogate have entered into an agreement for a long-term partnership to jointly invest approximately €1 billion in the modernisation of North Sea Terminal Bremerhaven in Germany. The transaction remains subject to relevant approvals.

The transformation includes the transition of terminal operatorship to APM Terminals, investment in modern equipment, infrastructure and systems, and integration of NTB into the APM Terminals global network. The ambition is to develop one of the world’s most efficient and resilient container terminals, including equipment electrification and renewable energy use, with the ambition of operating with zero greenhouse gas emissions. Terminal capacity is expected to increase from approximately three million to four million TEU annually.

As Project Engineering Lead, you will lead a team to coordinate the delivery of multidisciplinary design and technical interfaces, from concept through Issued-for-Construction packages and final engineering close-out. Based in Bremerhaven, Germany, you will report to the Project Director and help ensure designs are compliant, constructable, properly controlled and aligned with operational requirements.

What We Can Offer

At APM Terminals, we foster a dynamic learning and training culture that empowers our employees to excel. Our commitment to improvement means every team member has the opportunity to develop their skills and advance their careers by continuously refining how we work. Experience a diverse, multinational workplace where your operational insights directly influence how we work.

  • Contribute to a major terminal transformation and modernisation project.
  • Develop your understanding of the global container and logistics industry.
  • Work across multiple engineering disciplines in a multicultural environment.
  • Build experience relevant to future project leadership or central APM Terminals project roles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead all design stages through internal and external consultants, from concept to Issued-for-Construction packages.
  • Coordinate civil, structural, mechanical, utilities, electrical, IT and automation disciplines, ensuring inputs are integrated and technical interfaces are resolved.
  • Ensure designs meet technical requirements, project phasing, regulations and APM Terminals Standard Employer’s Requirements.
  • Support procurement through timely technical documentation, technical bid evaluations, vendor follow-up and input to applicable agreements.
  • Implement design quality controls, including structured reviews, value engineering, third-party verification, inspection planning and requirements traceability.
  • Coordinate with construction, permitting, operations and external partners to support constructability, regulatory compliance and operational readiness.
  • Maintain design schedules, deliverables and risk registers; report progress, risks and interface status; and oversee as-built documentation and engineering close-out.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Continuous improvement mindset: we are looking for someone who brings a thoughtful improvement mindset—curious about how work gets done and motivated to make meaningful, sustainable improvements over time.
  • Leadership expectation: We are looking for people who consistently put customers first, lead by example with respect for people, deliver results with integrity, and drive continuous improvement by solving problems at the root, developing people, and raising standards every day.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related field; a master’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management or a related field is highly desirable.
  • At least 7–10 years of infrastructure design experience, preferably involving container terminals, quay walls, breakwaters or associated infrastructure.
  • Proven ability to coordinate multidisciplinary consultants and teams through complex design phases and translate operational requirements into technical outputs.
  • Strong knowledge of permitting processes, international design codes and engineering best practices; port-authority approval experience is advantageous.
  • Advanced written and spoken communication skills in English; German is preferred, together with experience working effectively in a culturally diverse environment.
