The SR400 Express Lanes Project is a transformative $4.6 billion infrastructure initiative led by SR400 Constructors, a 50/50 joint venture between Flatiron Dragados and ACCIONA. Commissioned by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and Georgia State Road Tollway Authority (SRTA), the project will add two 16-mile express lanes from Sandy Springs MARTA Station (Exit 5) to McFarland (Exit 12), enhancing mobility along one of Georgia’s busiest corridors. With a peak workforce of over 500, the project also includes dedicated bus rapid transit stations and key bridge refurbishments. Construction is set to begin in late 2025, with substantial completion anticipated in 2031.

The Project Engineer – ITS will support field installation, testing, and engineering coordination for intelligent transportation systems across the SR400 corridor. This role supports short-term planning, coordination of fiber, power and field devices, installation records, and acceptance testing to help ensure systems meet project requirements. The Project Engineer works closely with superintendents, ITS and electrical subcontractors, vendors, roadway teams, and senior engineers to track progress, resolve installation issues, and support safe field work.

Job Description

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:

  • Support field installation, testing, and commissioning of Intelligent Transportation Systems throughout the SR 400 corridor.

  • Coordinate installation of fiber-optic communications, conduit, pull boxes, cabinets, power systems, CCTV cameras, Dynamic Message Signs, detection systems, traffic-monitoring equipment, and other ITS devices.

  • Coordinate daily ITS activities with field leadership, electrical/ITS subcontractors, roadway crews, utility teams, traffic-control personnel, vendors, and designers.

  • Review ITS plans, specifications, shop drawings, wiring diagrams, fiber plans, equipment data, installation details, and approved design changes.

  • Verify field locations, foundations, conduit routing, cabinet placement, device mounting, power connections, communications connections, and equipment installations.

  • Coordinate ITS civil work including foundations, conduit, trenching, directional drilling, pull boxes, equipment pads, and support structures with other construction disciplines.

  • Coordinate fiber installation, splicing, termination, labeling, testing, and review of OTDR and other fiber test results.

  • Support installation and troubleshooting of electrical service, grounding, communications networks, cabinets, field devices, and system interfaces.

  • Coordinate equipment testing, site acceptance testing, integration testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and punch-list resolution.

  • Track ITS subcontractor production, manpower, equipment, material deliveries, long-lead equipment, and installation progress.

  • Maintain accurate redlines and as-built records for conduit, fiber routing, splice locations, cabinets, power, communications, and field devices.

  • Develop ITS look-ahead plans and track RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, testing records, quantities, field changes, and technical documentation.

  • Monitor cost, schedule, quality, subcontractor performance, and safety for assigned ITS work.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 3 years of field experience in infrastructure, roadway, or bridge construction preferred.

  • Familiarity with GDOT projects and knowledge of AASHTO and FHWA standards is a plus.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to field offices and job sites as needed.

  • Basic knowledge of cost tracking, budget monitoring, and field production documentation.

  • Proficiency in construction technologies and software such as Primavera P6, Procore, Bluebeam, and HCSS.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and traffic control plans.

  • Strong communication and coordination skills with both field and office teams.
