A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Project Engineer – Telecom Macro Structures is an individual contributor responsible for the structural analysis, design, review, and approval of Macro telecom structures, including self-supporting towers, guyed towers, monopoles, foundations, and related engineered products. The position primarily supports Macro products and is responsible for developing safe, manufacturable, and cost-effective engineering solutions that meet customer requirements, applicable codes, and Valmont standards.

The Project Engineer independently executes standard structural engineering assignments from quotation through order execution and provides PE-level review and approval within established responsibilities. The role also supports customer and field needs, NPD execution, engineering standardization, automation, process improvement, and development of less-experienced technical resources.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform structural analysis and design of self-supporting towers, guyed towers, monopoles, foundations, existing structures, and related Macro products using applicable engineering methods and analysis software.
  • Independently process and review engineering designs for quotations and orders, ensuring compliance with customer requirements, applicable codes, Valmont standards, manufacturing requirements, and project commitments.
  • Prepare, review, approve, and stamp engineering calculations and designs within the incumbent's professional competence and assigned technical responsibilities, including primarily their own work and limited review of work prepared by others.
  • Interpret customer specifications, loading criteria, geotechnical information, project requirements, and applicable codes to develop safe, manufacturable, and economical engineering solutions.
  • Provide continuity from quotation through order execution, coordinating with Drafting to ensure approved engineering requirements are accurately translated into drawings, Bills of Materials, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Provide direct technical support to customers, Sales Application Engineering, PLM, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Take technical ownership of typical field and product-performance issues, including investigation, root-cause evaluation, and corrective recommendations, while supporting senior technical resources on complex or high-risk issues.
  • Serve as technical lead for selected NPD projects and support product development, standardization, and other strategic business initiatives as assigned.
  • Support development and validation of engineering automation and calculation tools by defining engineering requirements, reviewing design logic, establishing acceptance criteria, and participating in technical testing and validation.
  • Lead smaller engineering process-improvement and standardization initiatives and participate in larger initiatives that improve quality, productivity, cycle time, manufacturability, and reuse of proven engineering solutions.
  • Share technical knowledge and provide guidance and mentoring to less-experienced engineers and other technical resources as appropriate.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable structural codes, customer requirements, industry practices, and technology changes and participate in relevant customer, technical, or industry activities as appropriate

Other Important Details about the Role:

The incumbent must demonstrate strong technical competence in Telecom structural engineering, including structural loading, steel design, foundation design, fabrication/manufacturing considerations, and application of relevant design codes. Prior Telecom industry structural engineering experience is required, with experience supporting tower and/or monopole products strongly aligned with the immediate needs of the position.

The Project Engineer is expected to independently execute standard work while recognizing technical risk and escalating unusual, novel, or high-risk applications to senior technical resources or the Engineering Manager – Macro/Structures. The position will primarily support Valmont’s tower products but may support other Telecom products as business needs require.

Success in this role requires strong ownership of assigned work, direct customer engagement, cross-functional collaboration, and continuous development of technical capability. Within approximately the first year, the incumbent is expected to be capable of independently processing quote designs, reviewing quote designs, processing order designs, and reviewing order designs for applicable Macro products.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline with 5+ years of relevant structural engineering experience.
  • Current Professional Engineer (PE) license, with the ability to obtain additional state registrations as required.
  • Demonstrated Telecom industry structural engineering experience, including design and/or analysis of telecom towers, monopoles, foundations, existing structures, or comparable telecommunications support structures.
  • Strong working knowledge of structural design codes and engineering methods applicable to Telecom structures, including TIA-222, IBC, AISC, ACI, and related standards, with experience using structural-analysis software such as TNX Tower, RISA-3D, or comparable tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage engineering projects and priorities, exercise sound professional judgment, solve technical problems, and communicate effectively with customers and cross-functional stakeholders.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Experience across multiple Macro structure types, including self-supporting towers, guyed towers, monopoles, foundations, and structural reanalysis/modifications.
  • Experience leading NPD engineering execution, engineering standardization, automation/tool validation, or process-improvement initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of steel fabrication, welding, manufacturing processes, quality requirements, and investigation/resolution of field issues.

Pay: $76,800 to $120,000.
