Are you interested in a career in healthcare but don't yet have direct patient care experience? Mercy's Pre-PCA Apprentice Program is designed to provide aspiring caregivers with the opportunity to learn foundational patient care skills while preparing for a future role as a Patient Care Associate (PCA).

As a Pre-PCA Apprentice, you will work alongside experienced healthcare professionals, receive hands-on training, and gain exposure to hospital operations while building the skills needed to deliver exceptional patient care.

What You'll Do

  • Learn and demonstrate basic patient care skills under supervision.
  • Observe and assist Patient Care Associates and nursing staff with daily patient care activities.
  • Support patients with comfort, safety, and mobility needs as appropriate.
  • Assist with stocking supplies, room preparation, and maintaining a clean patient environment.
  • Develop an understanding of infection prevention, patient privacy, and safety standards.
  • Participate in classroom, simulation, and on-the-job training activities.
  • Complete all required learning modules and competency assessments.
  • Build relationships with patients, families, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members.

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or GED required, or currently enrolled and expected to graduate soon.
  • Interest in pursuing a healthcare career.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Compassionate, patient-focused approach to care.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Willingness to learn and successfully complete the apprenticeship program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer, customer service, caregiving, or healthcare exposure.
  • Interest in advancing into a Patient Care Associate, Nursing, or other clinical role.
