Job Description:

PHLEBOTOMIST 

Department: Clinical Operations 
Reports To: Clinical Manager/Laboratory Supervisor 
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 
Location: Carolina Oncology Specialists 

Position Summary 

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood specimens and performing related laboratory support activities for patients receiving care at Carolina Oncology Specialists. This position plays a critical role in supporting physicians and clinical staff by ensuring accurate specimen collection, processing, documentation, and delivery of exceptional patient care. The Phlebotomist serves as a patient advocate, demonstrating compassion and professionalism when interacting with oncology and hematology patients throughout their treatment journey. 

Essential Functions 

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection procedures according to established policies and procedures. 

  • Verify patient identity and laboratory orders prior to specimen collection. 

  • Accurately label, process, prepare, and distribute specimens for testing. 

  • Maintain specimen integrity through proper handling, storage, and transportation practices. 

  • Document laboratory activities and patient information in the electronic medical record (EMR). 

  • Provide compassionate and professional patient care while explaining procedures and addressing patient concerns. 

  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions during and after specimen collection. 

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, CLIA, infection control, and safety standards. 

  • Maintain laboratory equipment and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition. 

  • Assist with inventory management and ordering of laboratory supplies. 

  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other staff to support efficient patient care and clinic operations. 

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, staff meetings, and required training programs. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Education & Experience 

Required 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 

  • Knowledge of phlebotomy procedures and specimen collection techniques. 

  • Basic computer proficiency and experience with electronic documentation systems. 

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. 

Preferred 

  • Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy Training Program. 

  • Current Phlebotomy Certification (ASCP, NHA, NCCT, or equivalent). 

  • One (1) year or more of phlebotomy experience in a clinic, hospital, laboratory, or oncology setting. 

  • Experience working with oncology, hematology, or infusion patients. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Knowledge of specimen collection, handling, and processing requirements. 

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. 

  • Excellent communication and patient service skills. 

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment. 

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times. 

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team. 

  • Compassion and sensitivity when working with patients undergoing cancer treatment. 

Physical Requirements 

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching. 

  • Frequent use of hands for specimen collection and data entry. 

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally. 

  • Ability to safely perform repetitive motions associated with phlebotomy procedures. 

  • Visual acuity sufficient to identify veins, labels, and laboratory documentation requirements. 

Working Conditions 

  • Outpatient oncology and hematology practice environment. 

  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and potentially infectious materials. 

  • Regular interaction with patients receiving cancer treatments and supportive care services.
