Responsibilities:

The Senior Director of Advancement is an experienced frontline fundraiser responsible for working with existing and prospective donors to identify and secure gifts at the $100,000+ level for University of Rochester Medicine. In doing so, they will manage a portfolio of major gift prospects, including grateful patients, community donors, and other interested individuals seeking to support clinical care, residency/fellowship programs, and research initiatives at URochester Medicine.

The Senior Director serves as the primary Advancement liaison for engagement and fundraising support for one or more departments, priority fundraising areas, or programs. They will work with department chairs to craft strategies for reaching unit fundraising goals and ensure that those priorities align with broader institutional goals, including those that support the For Ever Better comprehensive campaign.

The Senior Director oversees URochester Medicine Advancement’s Philanthropy Champions programs. Philanthropy Champions is the primary engagement strategy for partnering with caregivers across URochester Medicine who can help identify and engage patient prospects with an interest in making a philanthropic impact at URochester.

The Senior Director reports to the Assistant Vice President for Clinical, Research, and Hospital Programs Advancement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Unit Partnership and Strategic Advancement Planning

• Serves as the primary Advancement liaison for engagement and fundraising support for one or more departments, priority fundraising areas, or programs.
• Works closely with the URochester Medicine and University Advancement leadership to identify fundraising priorities and develop compelling cases for support.
• Develops, implements, and assesses comprehensive engagement and fundraising plans for each department or unit.

Donor Strategic Advancement Planning

• Manages a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects with a collaborative, donor-centric approach.
• Creates engagement and solicitation strategies for potential donors capable of contributing gifts of $100,000 or more. This will include an ongoing pipeline development strategy focusing on residency/fellowship alumni, friends/unaffiliated prospects and grateful patient and family members for assigned areas and will require appropriate identification and qualification strategies.

 

Donor Engagement and Relationship Management

• Maintains regular contact with prospects and donors through personal visits, virtual meetings, phone calls, emails, and written correspondence.
• Builds long-term relationships based on trust while identifying opportunities to deepen engagement and philanthropic investment.
• Solicits, closes, and oversees stewardship of philanthropic gifts to URochester Medicine. 

With strategic direction from the Assistant Vice President and using a high degree of independent latitude and judgment, directs the Philanthropy Champions engagement programs for URochester Medicine:

• Develops curriculum for the Philanthropy Champions programs (Signature and Essentials); augments curriculum for delivery to other audiences throughout URochester Medicine (departments, units, hospitals, volunteer boards, etc.)
• Identifies and recruits Philanthropy Champions participants in partnership with other Clinical Programs gift officers.
• Plans and executes all Philanthropy Champions sessions in both the Signature and Essentials programs
• Collaborates  with other Clinical Program gift officers, to present curriculum in Philanthropy Champions sessions, and to other audiences as appropriate
• Develops digital and print resources to support participants and their Advancement partners in learning, applying and retaining patient philanthropy practices
• Promotes the Philanthropy Champions engagement strategy to new audiences at URochester Medicine and its affiliated hospitals
• Directly interfaces with Philanthropy Champions participants, department chairs, division chiefs and URochester Medicine leadership to implement and sustain and expand the Philanthropy Champions programs

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree and 7 years of fundraising experience required
• Master's degree preferred
  Or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Experience in individual major gift fundraising in a medical setting preferred
• Experience cultivating and soliciting prospects capable of gifts of $100,000 or more preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising preferred
• Positive attitude that focuses on collaborative solutions to challenges preferred
• Excellent writing and verbal communication, including the presentation of quantitative and qualitative information to a diverse audience of advancement and medical professionals preferred
• Flexible approach to new and changing initiative surrounding patient and family giving preferred
• Experience and aptitude for analytical thinking preferred.
• Customer-service orientation preferred
