Role: Paralegal

Department: Cargo

Location: Guildford

The Team

Our Cargo team is one of the largest and most respected marine practices globally. We advise a diverse client base across the shipping, marine insurance and logistics sectors on recovery and liability matters arising worldwide.

Our work includes cargo recovery claims, transportation liability disputes, hull and freight matters, salvage security issues, general average claims and CMR road transit recoveries. Our extensive international network and understanding of cross-border legal and commercial issues enable us to provide clients with strategic, commercially focused advice and maximise recovery prospects in multiple jurisdictions.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Paralegal to join a highly regarded team and gain exposure to a broad range of marine and transportation disputes with an international focus.

The Role

Working closely with Partners, Associates and Senior Associates, you will support the team on a varied caseload of marine and cargo recovery matters. The role offers excellent exposure to clients and provides an opportunity to develop specialist expertise within a market-leading practice.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with the management of cargo recovery and transportation liability claims.
  • Reviewing, analysing and organising evidence, correspondence and claim documentation.
  • Drafting legal correspondence, witness statements, instructions and reports to clients.
  • Managing court and litigation procedural requirements, including filing and service of documents.
  • Conducting legal and factual research relating to marine, transport and insurance matters.
  • Liaising with clients, insurers, surveyors, experts, correspondents and overseas lawyers.
  • Assisting with recovery actions in domestic and international jurisdictions.
  • Monitoring key deadlines and maintaining accurate case management records.
  • Preparing bundles, chronologies and case summaries.
  • Supporting business development initiatives and client-focused projects where required.
  • Assisting with billing processes, matter administration and financial management activities.

Skills & Experience

  • Previous Paralegal experience within a law firm, insurer or professional services environment, ideally supporting litigation, dispute resolution, marine, shipping, transport or insurance matters.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Excellent drafting, research and analytical skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Confident communicator with the ability to build effective relationships with colleagues, clients and external stakeholders.
  • Commercially minded with an interest in marine, transportation, logistics and insurance-related claims.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and legal case management systems.
  • Law degree, GDL, LPC, SQE or equivalent legal qualification, or working towards a legal qualification, would be advantageous.
