To ensure the accurate, safe, and timely issuing of packaging materials from the packaging store to production and other authorised departments. The role is responsible for maintaining accurate stock movements, ensuring materials are properly handled and stored, and operating a forklift safely to support the efficient movement of materials within the warehouse and production areas.

Key Responsibilities

1. Issuing of Packaging Materials
  • Receive authorised material requests from Production and other relevant departments.
  • Pick and issue packaging materials according to production requirements and authorised documentation.
  • Verify material codes, descriptions, quantities, batches and specifications before issuing.
  • Ensure the correct materials are issued to the correct production line or department.
  • Record all material issues accurately on the relevant system, documents or stock records.
  • Ensure materials issued follow FIFO/FEFO principles where applicable.
  • Return unused or excess packaging materials to the correct storage locations and update stock records accordingly.
2. Forklift Operations
  • Operate the forklift safely and efficiently when moving, loading, unloading and positioning packaging materials.
  • Conduct pre-use forklift inspections and report any defects immediately.
  • Follow all site traffic rules, forklift procedures and occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Safely transport pallets and packaging materials between storage areas, production and dispatch areas.
  • Ensure loads are stable, correctly positioned and within the forklift's safe operating capacity.
  • Park and secure the forklift correctly when not in use.
  • Maintain good housekeeping around forklift operating and storage areas.
3. Stock Control
  • Assist with maintaining accurate packaging material inventory.
  • Perform stock counts and participate in cycle counts and physical inventory checks.
  • Investigate and report stock discrepancies to the supervisor.
  • Ensure packaging materials are stored in designated locations and properly identified.
  • Monitor stock levels and report shortages, damaged materials and obsolete or slow-moving stock.
  • Maintain proper segregation of different materials, batches and packaging specifications.
4. Warehouse and Packaging Store Activities
  • Receive and assist with the put-away of packaging materials when required.
  • Ensure packaging materials are protected from damage, contamination and deterioration.
  • Keep aisles, storage locations and work areas clean and organised.
  • Assist with loading and unloading vehicles where required.
  • Follow warehouse procedures for material handling, storage and issuing.
  • Support production by ensuring packaging materials are available when required.
5. Documentation and Systems
  • Complete material issue notes, transfer documents, stock records and other required documentation accurately.
  • Capture material movements on the warehouse/ERP system where applicable.
  • Ensure all transactions are completed promptly and accurately.
  • Maintain traceability of packaging materials from receipt through to issue.
6. Health, Safety and Compliance
  • Comply with all company health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses and damaged equipment immediately.
  • Follow forklift safety procedures and only operate equipment when authorised and appropriately trained.
  • Handle packaging materials in accordance with company quality and hygiene requirements.
  • Maintain a safe working environment for colleagues, production personnel and visitors.

  • Accuracy of material issuing.
  • Accuracy of stock records and system transactions.
  • Timely delivery of packaging materials to production.
  • Forklift safety and compliance.
  • Stock variance and inventory accuracy.
  • Reduction of material damage and wastage.
  • Compliance with FIFO/FEFO requirements.
  • Warehouse housekeeping and organisation.
  • Compliance with health, safety and quality procedures.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric.
  • Valid forklift operator certification/licence.
  • Previous experience in a warehouse, packaging store or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in issuing and handling packaging materials is advantageous.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Experience using an ERP/Warehouse Management System is advantageous.
  • Good understanding of warehouse and stock-control procedures.

Working Environment

The position operates primarily within a packaging store/warehouse and manufacturing environment and requires regular movement between the warehouse and production areas. The role may involve prolonged periods of standing, walking, material handling and forklift operation.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to safely operate a forklift for extended periods.
  • Ability to inspect, handle and move packaging materials.
  • Ability to work in a warehouse/manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to perform stock counts and material verification activities.
  • Ability to comply with all applicable safety requirements.
