Job Description:

General Surgeon

The General Surgeon is responsible for performing surgeries, as directed by the Orthopedic Department Medical Director.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs surgeries and manages the surgical team
  • Performs procedures, diagnostic procedures, and therapeutic procedures within scope of practice
  • Develops preoperative, intraoperative ad postoperative plans including obtaining patient history, ordering lab tests and diagnostic studies, and making referrals
  • Discusses surgery results with patients and medical staff
  • Examines patients to make diagnoses and treat illnesses and injuries
  • Follows all medical laws, guidelines, regulations and standards
  • Continually research and adopt new technologies
  • Assures complete and proper charting is completed in a timely manner
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Develops strong relationships with patients and medical staff
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Communicates and collaborates with medical and administrative staffers
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to work productively with patient, families, other healthcare staff, and other departments
  • Exhibits appropriate time management skills
  • Demonstrates the ability to make quick decisions in a high-pressure environment
  • Assures proper charting is completed in a timely manner
  • Basic computer skills

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/DEGREES

  • Meets criteria for Medical Staff or Allied Health Professional membership and privileges

PHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to stand, walk, bend, reach, and stretch frequently and for prolonged periods of time
  • Possess physical agility and adequate reaction time to respond quickly and appropriately to unexpected patient care needs
  • Needs adequate hearing and visual acuity, including adequate color vision
  • Requires fine motor skills, adequate eye-hand coordination, and ability to grasp and handle objects
  • Able to use proper body mechanics to assist patients in ambulating, transferring in and out of bed, chair or wheelchair
  • May be required to lift up to 75 pounds
  • Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and bodily fluids
  • Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone
  • May require periodic use of personal computer
