Job Type: On-Call Variable Time

Compensation: $22 to $30 an hour based on experience

This position is based in the Midwest and offers flexibility to work remotely. Candidates must be located within the Midwest - IL, or IN preferred.

JOB SUMMARY: As an On-Call Archaeologist, you will support a variety of cultural resource projects across the Midwest region, with a strong focus on work within the states of Illinois and Indiana. This position is not tied to a specific location, offering the opportunity to contribute to diverse field and research efforts throughout the broader region.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions:

  • Serve as a Crew Member for the project

  • Conduct Phase I and Phase II cultural resources surveys

  • Document archaeological sites and IOs/IFs

  • Conduct probing or shovel testing

  • Use hand-held field technology (i.e., ArcGIS phone/tablet application paired with sub-meter GPS receivers)

  • Work in moderate weather conditions (fluctuating temperatures and inclement weather, including rain and snow)

  • Ability to walk 4-10 miles per day over rough terrain and lift up to 50 lbs

  • Work independently and efficiently, while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings

  • Follow instruction and make adjustments when provided feedback

  • Support, actively participate in, and act in accordance with Wright’s and Eocene Environmental Group's culture of safety and employee ownership

  • Comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintain knowledge of and follow all company policies and procedures

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Holds a bachelor's degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field:

  • Proficient in prehistoric and/or historic archaeology in the Mid-west region

  • Proficient in documenting archaeological sites and IOs/IFs in the Mid-west region

  • Organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, dependable, and trustworthy

  • Excellent navigational skills (GPS and compass) and ability to navigate and drive 4WD vehicles

  • Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficiency using tablets (Apple iPad or Samsung Galaxy) to document cultural resources

  • Proficiency with sub-meter GPS receiver

  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 applications (for phone or tablet)

  • Previous NHPA, NEPA, FERC, and/or other cultural or environmental trainings

  • Strong writing and editing skills

  • Ability to evaluate resources for NRHP-eligibility
