Job Overview

The Medical Laboratory Director provides medical, scientific, and technical leadership for IQVIA Laboratories' clinical testing operations. This role is responsible for ensuring laboratory services are delivered in accordance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, quality, and scientific standards while supporting global clinical research programs.

The position serves as the designated Laboratory Director for IQVIA Laboratories in Singapore and Tokyo and works closely with Laboratory Operations, Scientific Affairs, Quality Assurance, Project Management, sponsors, investigators, and other stakeholders to ensure the delivery of high-quality laboratory testing services.

Essential Functions

  • Provide medical, scientific, and technical oversight of clinical laboratory testing operations and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, and quality requirements.

  • Oversee the medical and scientific aspects of clinical testing services and ensure laboratory operations meet or exceed applicable standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance and operational teams to maintain and continuously improve quality systems, laboratory processes, and customer service standards.

  • Identify, escalate, and support the timely resolution of patient safety, quality, and data integrity issues, including oversight of investigations, corrective actions, and proficiency testing programs.

  • Review and approve validation plans, protocols, and reports for new assays and testing methodologies prior to implementation in the production environment.

  • Support the transition of clinical trial assays from development into routine testing operations and ensure appropriate technical and operational procedures are established and maintained.

  • Ensure laboratory procedures, testing platforms, and methodologies are appropriately documented, reviewed, and updated to support operational consistency and regulatory compliance.

  • Partner with Laboratory Operations to maintain testing menus, service directories, and test coding structures.

  • Collaborate with Project Management, Scientific Affairs, Quality Assurance, sponsors, investigators, and laboratory operations teams to ensure testing services meet client, scientific, and regulatory requirements.

  • Provide scientific expertise and technical support during client meetings, audits, bid defenses, proposal development activities, and other business development initiatives.

  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and development of laboratory personnel to ensure appropriate qualifications, competencies, and ongoing training.

  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive culture that promotes teamwork, knowledge sharing, employee engagement, and operational excellence.

  • Support implementation of health, safety, and environmental programs and help maintain a safe laboratory environment.

  • Remain current with scientific, technical, and regulatory developments impacting laboratory medicine and clinical testing.

  • Maintain continuing education and professional development requirements necessary for applicable certifications, registrations, and laboratory directorship responsibilities.

  • Participate in site leadership activities, governance meetings, sponsor qualification programs, and other leadership initiatives as required.

  • Support anatomic pathology-related activities where appropriately qualified and credentialed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • MD and/or PhD in Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, Biological Sciences, Health Sciences, or a related discipline.

  • Significant experience in clinical laboratory leadership, pathology, laboratory medicine, clinical research, or a related scientific environment.

  • Strong knowledge of clinical laboratory testing, quality management systems, accreditation requirements, and applicable regulatory frameworks.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and collaborate effectively with stakeholders across a global organization.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • High standards of professional ethics, scientific integrity, and patient focus.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and relevant laboratory and business systems.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic and regulated environment.

Preferred

  • Current registration with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC)

  • Board certification in Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Pathology, or another recognized specialist qualification relevant to laboratory directorship responsibilities.

  • Training and/or experience in Anatomic Pathology is strongly preferred; however, candidates from other relevant pathology, laboratory medicine, or clinical laboratory disciplines are encouraged to apply.

  • Experience serving as a Laboratory Director, Medical Director, Clinical Governance Officer, or in a comparable senior leadership role.

  • Experience working within CAP, ISO 15189, CLIA, or other accredited laboratory environments.

  • Experience supporting laboratory accreditation assessments, regulatory inspections, audits, and quality management systems.

  • Experience within a central laboratory, reference laboratory, contract research organization (CRO), pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or clinical trials environment.

  • Japanese language proficiency is advantageous but not required.

  • This role is based in Singapore and supports both the Singapore and Tokyo laboratory sites.
