Job Summary:
The Brigham Young University School of Medicine invites applications for a full-time Medical Clinical Educator faculty position. This position is designed for a physician educator (MD or DO) who is passionate about medical student education and curriculum development. The successful applicant will teach across all three phases of the medical school and contribute to a Christ-centered and collaborative learning environment. This role involves laboratory, small group, and large group teaching to medical students, curriculum development, mentoring, and educational scholarship.
The Medical Clinical Educator will serve as a critical faculty member across all phases of the curriculum, contributing to case-based learning, clinical skill instruction, simulation-based education, clerkship education, and global health programs. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with basic science and clinical faculty and curriculum leaders to promote the integration of clinical reasoning, patient-centered care, and foundational medical sciences across the curriculum.
Applicants must hold an MD or DO degree and have experience in medical education. The position is open to individuals from any clinical discipline. The ideal candidate will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: problem-based learning (PBL), case-based learning (CBL), simulation, active learning, bedside teaching, resident teaching and education, and/or team teaching with foundational scientists in the basic sciences. This position emphasizes excellence in teaching, curriculum development, learner assessment, and educational scholarship. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position located on BYU’s campus in Provo, Utah.
Required Degree: MD or DO from an accredited institution; Eligibility for medical licensure in State of Utah. The required degree must be completed by the start date.
Experience:
- Experience in medical education, including teaching medical students or residents.
- Expertise in one or more of the following: PBL, CBL, simulation, active learning, bedside teaching, resident education, and/or team teaching.
- Strong collaborative skills and the ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
- Evidence of potential for scholarly productivity and creative activity.

- Current and active medical license in the state of Utah or the ability to obtain such a license
- Board certification in their area of medical specialty
- Preferred: Demonstrated commitment to educational scholarship in medical education.
- Preferred: Three or more years of experience in undergraduate or graduate medical education.
- Preferred: Experience developing and implementing integrated medical school curricula.
- Preferred: Demonstrated expertise in case-based learning (CBL), problem-based learning (PBL), simulation-based education, clinical skills instruction, or competency-based assessment.
- Preferred: Experience designing clinical cases, simulation scenarios, OSCEs, or other learner assessments.
- Preferred: Experience designing interprofessional or longitudinal and clinical learning experiences.
- Preferred: Leadership experience as a course director, clerkship director, curriculum committee member, or educational program leader.
- Preferred: Record of scholarly work in medical education, including peer-reviewed publications, presentations, grants, curriculum innovations, or educational research.
- Preferred: Experience mentoring faculty, residents, or medical students.
- Preferred: Familiarity with LCME accreditation standards and continuous quality improvement processes in medical education.
- Preferred: Experience working in an integrated organ systems curriculum and collaborating with basic science and clinical faculty.
- Preferred: Clinical practice experience that supports the application of clinical reasoning and patient-centered care in foundational medical education.
Duties/Expectations:
Teaching and Facilitation
- Facilitate case-based learning (CBL) sessions that promote clinical reasoning and integration of foundational sciences.
- Facilitate other small group learning and active learning activities as assigned.
- Teach clinical medicine concepts in courses in Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3.
- Provide instruction in history-taking, physical examination, clinical reasoning, communication skills, and professional development.
- Participate in student assessment, feedback, and remediation activities as assigned.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team teaching with foundational scientists in the basic sciences.
- Provide bedside teaching and clinical instruction in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Serve as faculty facilitator for core clerkship simulation and standardized patient labs, as well as for other clinical courses in Phase 2 and Phase 3 as needed
Curriculum Development
- Develop, review, revise, and update clinical cases for Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 courses.
- Collaborate with course directors, clerkship directors, curriculum leaders, and faculty to ensure vertical and horizontal integration of content through development of educational cases.
- Collaborate with course directors, clerkship directors, curriculum leaders, and faculty to ensure alignment of learning objectives.
- Develop and review clinical cases that support clerkship learning objectives, clinical reasoning, professional identity formation, and global health competencies.
- Design case materials that will align with course objectives, competencies, and accreditation standards.
- Participate in curriculum review and continuous quality improvement efforts.
- Contribute to simulation-based education, case-based learning, and problem-based learning initiatives.
- Develop, coordinate, and assess curricular materials in collaboration with other faculty.
Simulation and Clinical Skills Education
- Develop simulation scenarios and clinical cases for simulation-based learning activities.
- Collaborate with Director of Simulation, simulation center personnel, clerkship directors, and course directors to create, implement, and evaluate simulation experiences.
- Support the design and delivery of formative and summative clinical skills assessments.
- Participate in objective structured clinical examination (OSCEs) and related assessment activities.
Citizenship and Scholarship
- Engage in educational scholarship related to medical education, curriculum, innovation, assessment, or simulation.
- Facilitate student engagement in evidence-based medicine and medical education scholarship.
- Participate in faculty governance, committees, and accreditation activities as appropriate.
- Contribute to mentoring students in scholarly work and supporting the educational mission of the School of Medicine.
- Maintain professional development in medical education and clinical practice.
- Participate in faculty development activities.
- May be assigned additional responsibilities within the School of Medicine, including participation in teaching, curriculum review, committee service, or other institutional initiatives.
