About this Mechatronics Engineer role at Snap Inc.

Snap Inc. · Onsite · Vienna, Austria

Snap Inc is a technology company. We believe the camera presents the greatest opportunity to improve the way people live and communicate. Snap contributes to human progress by empowering people to express themselves, live in the moment, learn about the world, and have fun together.

The Company operates Snapchat, a visual messaging app that enhances your relationships with friends, family, and the world, and Specs Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary dedicated to making computing more human, in addition to Bitmoji, Saturn, and other digital services.

The Spectacles team develops augmented reality glasses that bring digital experiences into the real world. Our team builds the software and computer-vision pipelines that calibrate Specs. We're hiring our first on-site hardware engineer to own the calibration lab's fixtures, targets, lighting, and camera rigs, and to be the bridge between our local software/CV team and our remote mechanical and electrical teams.

What you’ll do

  • Own the calibration lab hardware: fixtures, targets, lighting, and camera rigs
  • Design and build fixtures, jigs, and simple mechanisms (CAD, 3D printing, machine shop)
  • Build prototype circuits and wiring; integrate sensors, lighting, and triggers
  • Integrate off-the-shelf components into stable, repeatable calibration stations
  • Bring up and accept new stations and vendor-built equipment
  • Characterize station repeatability and fix drift when it appears
  • Root-cause hardware issues locally; escalate to remote ME/EE with clear data
  • Read and modify the Python scripts that drive lab hardware
  • Define requirements for, and review deliverables from, remote ME/EE teams
  • Document setups and procedures; manage vendors, parts, and lab upkeep

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong mechanical fundamentals: CAD, manufacturing drawings, tolerancing and GD&T, fixtures and jigs, 3D printing
  • Practical electrical skills: prototype circuits, wiring, sensors, DAQ; debugs power and signal chains with a multimeter and oscilloscope
  • Hands-on integration and debug of systems combining mechanical, electrical, cameras, and robot arms
  • Defines requirements and reviews and accepts deliverables from other engineering teams
  • Communicates clearly with remote hardware teams and local software engineers
  • Reads and modifies Python scripts; production-grade code not required
  • Practical, data-driven, and comfortable with shifting priorities

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA in Mechatronics, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of industry experience building and maintaining lab or test hardware
  • Produces CAD models and manufacturing drawings independently
  • Has designed, toleranced, and built fixtures, jigs, or mechanisms, including 3D-printed parts
  • Builds prototype circuits and wiring; troubleshoots power and signal issues with standard lab equipment
  • Able to read and modify Python scripts

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS in Mechatronics, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Computer-vision or optics knowledge
  • Experience with opto-mechanical systems
  • Experience with small, highly toleranced components and assemblies
  • Test-station development, debug, and support
  • Simple board design taken through outsourced fabrication
  • Experience programming industrial robot arms (e.g., KUKA, ABB) using vendor toolkits
  • Measurement system analysis (repeatability, Gage R&R)
  • Background in AR/VR, wearables, or consumer hardware
