About this Manufacturing Engineer - 1st shift role at GE Vernova

GE Vernova · Onsite · Schenectady

Job Description Summary

GE Vernova's Steam Turbine Repairs & Upgrades operation in Schenectady, NY is one of the most technically specialized manufacturing environments in the power generation industry. When a power plant goes offline for a planned maintenance outage, the rotating components — the steam turbine rotors — come to us. Our team performs precision clean, inspect, and repair work on these critical assets, and when we find something, we own the communication back to the customer.

We are hiring two Manufacturing Engineers to support this high-impact work. This is a hands-on, technically driven role where no two days look exactly alike. You will be embedded with the shop floor team, owning the engineering process from initial assessment through rotor repair, welding upgrades, and final documentation. You will interface daily with machining, balancing, quality, and project management — and your work will directly determine whether a customer's power plant gets back online safely and on time.

This role is based at our 1.2-million-square-foot Schenectady facility. We want candidates who can walk in and be energized by the scale and complexity of what we do — not overwhelmed by it.

Job Description

What You Will Do

  • Develop and maintain standard repair plans for steam rotor work, including both planned scopes and field-identified findings
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership and problem-solving support directly on the shop floor during rotor repairs and new builds
  • Lead and manage rotor welding upgrade projects, owning timelines, scope, and cross-functional coordination
  • Define and control production processes, including tooling, equipment, and design specification validation
  • Build, maintain, and improve operator training programs; partner with Quality Process Engineers (QPEs) to certify newly trained operators
  • Develop work instructions, build books, and project folders — and maintain them for the life of each project
  • Interface cross-functionally with Engineering, Project Management, Quality, and manufacturing cells including Machining and the Balance Cell
  • Drive continuous improvement across cycle time, cost reduction, equipment reliability, tooling, and ergonomic/safety solutions
  • Support product qualification activities as needed
  • Operate as an operations leader — not just a technical resource — actively contributing to team performance and production outcomes

What We Are Looking For:

  • Mechanical aptitude — this is the single most important attribute Ryan (hiring manager) cited. Whether your background is in traditional engineering, skilled trades, construction, automotive mechanics, or industrial maintenance, you need to be someone who understands how mechanical systems work and can learn new technical environments quickly
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze problems, develop solutions, and communicate findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills — you will be writing work instructions, interfacing with customers, and coordinating across teams
  • A mindset oriented toward continuous learning — you do not need to know steam turbines on Day 1, but you do need to be able to learn this space

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering (or a related field) — or equivalent relevant work experience (7+ years in a hands-on manufacturing or industrial environment)
  • Recent graduates with a strong academic record and relevant internship or co-op experience are genuinely welcome — this team is open to developing the right person
  • Experience working with customer-owned products that require repair or refurbishment
  • Familiarity with lean principles — 5S, takt time, cycle time analysis
  • Project management experience or demonstrated ability to manage deliverables across cross-functional teams

Note:

  • This position does not support Sponsorship or Relocation
