The Role

Your role

As a Mainframe z/OS System Programmer, you’ll apply your expertise to the systems at the heart of customers’ mission-critical IT environments. You’ll be solving complex technical challenges, maintaining reliable z/OS platforms and helping customers evolve their mainframe environments as part of a changing hybrid IT landscape. 

Your work will span both day-to-day platform operations and longer-term improvement. You’ll maintain and upgrade z/OS environments, diagnose system and performance issues, support disaster recovery activities and make recommendations that improve resilience and performance. When an issue occurs, you’ll investigate the root cause and work with technical teams to put the right solution in place.

What you will do

• Run z/OS environments: Install, configure, maintain and support z/OS systems, applying maintenance and patches to keep environments reliable and current

• Maintain the platform: Complete SYSRES builds, apply PTFs, update licence keys and manage third-party software and product maintenance

• Find and fix: Diagnose system failures, freezes, job abends and other technical issues, identifying root causes and implementing appropriate resolutions

• Optimise performance: Monitor system behaviour and recommend improvements that support performance, stability and efficient operation

• Strengthen resilience: Support GDPS environments and disaster recovery drills, including flip-and-stay recovery approaches

• Support modernisation: Contribute technical expertise to mainframe migration and modernisation initiatives, helping customers evolve and integrate their mainframe environments

• Protect production: Participate in 24/7 on-call support and respond to system issues affecting production environments

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

• 7+ years of hands-on Mainframe z/OS system programming experience, including installation, configuration, maintenance and production support

• Experience applying z/OS maintenance and patches, managing third-party software and supporting system reliability

• Hands-on experience with SYSRES builds, PTF application, disaster recovery drills and license-key updates

• Experience performing product maintenance, upgrades and compatibility checks, including work with z/OS 3.1 and IBM z16 environments

• Proven ability to diagnose and resolve system failures, freezes, job abends and performance issues

• Working knowledge of GDPS and disaster recovery approaches, including the flip-and-stay model

• Experience contributing to mainframe migration or modernization initiatives and recommending system performance improvements

• Ability to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation supporting production systems 

Preferred Technical and Professional Experience

• Should have experience in Mainframe z/OS system programming problem determination.
• Technical guidance and support for high availability and disaster recovery enhancements
• Evaluate and recommend software changes to meet organizational needs
• Infrastructure/Application issue resolution for z/OS
