Low Voltage/Network Technician

   

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

   

The Low Voltage/Network Technician serves as a core member of the IT Infrastructure team, reporting to the Director of IT Infrastructure Services. This hands-on role is focused on the installation, termination, testing, and maintenance of the University's low-voltage and network infrastructure, including Category 6/6A copper and fiber optic cabling, wireless access points, security cameras, network switches, and related equipment. The technician leads installation work with the team's student workers, ensures every job meets industry standards and University specifications, and partners with Network Engineers on deployments and strategic projects. The technician also supports ITS auxiliary services, such as residence halls, dining, and external partnerships.
This role is ideal for a skilled, self-motivated, and hard-working installer who takes pride in clean, organized, and well-documented work. JOB DESCRIPTION

   

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Install, route, terminate, label, and test Category 6/6A copper cabling systems, including pathways, supports, patch panels, jacks, and cable management, in accordance with TIA standards and University specifications.
  • Install, splice, terminate, and test single-mode and multimode fiber optic cabling for backbone and building-to-building connections, including fusion splicing, connectorization, and OTDR and optical loss testing.
  • Install and deploy network and low-voltage devices, including wireless access points, indoor and outdoor cameras, network switches, racks, and battery backups (UPS), ensuring proper weatherproofing, grounding, and bonding.
  • Lead student workers on installation projects and daily operations by assigning tasks, training them on proper techniques and safety practices, and reviewing their work for quality and standards compliance.
  • Respond to service requests and incidents involving cabling, connectivity, and installed devices; trace, troubleshoot, and repair physical-layer issues. Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to respond to after-hours incidents and outages.
  • Create and maintain documentation, including as-built drawings, labeling, test results, and rack elevations. Assist with project estimates, material lists, and coordination with contractors, vendors, and customers.
  • Perform low-voltage and network installations, moves, and repairs delivered through ITS auxiliary operations, such as residence halls, dining, and external partnerships, coordinating work with customers and vendors.
  • Obtain and maintain required low-voltage certification(s). Proactively pursue opportunities to learn new systems and technologies, share knowledge, and partner with team members to enhance departmental expertise.
  • Perform all other duties assigned to support department and University objectives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) or more years of hands-on experience installing structured cabling or low-voltage systems, or equivalent trade/vocational training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three (3) or more years of commercial low-voltage installation experience, including fiber optic splicing and testing.
  • Florida Limited Energy Specialty Contractor (ES) license, or the experience needed to qualify for the license exam.
  • BICSI Installer 2 (Copper and/or Optical Fiber) or BICSI Technician certification.
  • Manufacturer installer certification (e.g., CommScope, Panduit, Corning) and OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification.
  • CompTIA Network+ certification.

PHYSICAL DEMAND AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical requirements include regular lifting and carrying of 5 to 70 pounds, frequent use of ladders and lifts, work above ceilings and in confined spaces, and occasional digging. This role requires sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting, kneeling, crawling, and climbing, as well as visual acuity (including distinguishing cable color codes), speech, hearing, hand-eye coordination, and manual dexterity. The position involves regular work outdoors and at job sites beyond the main campus.


REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must hold, or obtain within six (6) months of hire, a BICSI Installer 1 (INST1) or higher certification, or a Fiber Optic Association Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) certification.
  • This position requires a criminal background check, which will include a Level II screening as required by Florida Statute §435.04.
  • This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.

 

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: This position is salaried and exempt. The normal work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; however, occasional after-hours work (evenings, weekends, and holidays) may be required. Regular local travel between university locations, customer job sites, and local vendors is required. Occasionally, travel to training, professional events, and conferences may be required. This position is eligible for a flexible work schedule.

 

TARGET HIRING SALARY & BENEFITS: $57,800-$62,900. Benefits include medical, personal, and parental leave, paid holidays, State of Florida health insurance and retirement plans.

 

LOCATION/WORK MODEL: Full-time/On-site
