Who we are supporting 

The NATO Communication and Information Agency (NCIA) is responsible for providing secure and effective communications and information technology (IT) services to NATO's member countries and its partners. The agency was established in 2012 and is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium.

The NCIA provides a wide range of services, including:

  • Cyber Security: The NCIA provides advanced cybersecurity solutions to protect NATO's communication networks and information systems against cyber threats.
  • Command and Control Systems: The NCIA develops and maintains the systems used by NATO's military commanders to plan and execute operations.
  • Satellite Communications: The NCIA provides satellite communications services to enable secure and reliable communications between NATO forces.
  • Electronic Warfare: The NCIA provides electronic warfare services to support NATO's mission to detect, deny, and defeat threats to its communication networks.
  • Information Management: The NCIA manages NATO's information technology infrastructure, including its databases, applications, and servers.

Overall, the NCIA plays a critical role in ensuring the security and effectiveness of NATO's communication and information technology capabilities.

The program

Assistance and Advisory Service (AAS)

The NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCI Agency) is NATO’s principal C3 capability deliverer and CIS service provider. It provides, maintains and defends the NATO enterprise-wide information technology infrastructure to enable Allies to consult together under Article IV, and, when required, stand together in the face of attack under Article V.

To provide these critical services, in the modern evolving dynamic environment the NCI Agency needs to build and maintain high performance-engaged workforce. The NCI Agency workforce strategically consists of three major categorise's: NATO International Civilians (NIC)'s, Military (Mil), and Interim Workforce Consultants (IWC)'s. The IWCs are a critical part of the overall NCI Agency workforce and make up approximately 15 percent of the total workforce.

Role Background

  • We are seeking a Linux Engineer to join the Enable Section within the Infrastructure Branch, supporting the NCSC environment at NATO's NCI Agency in Mons, Belgium. The successful candidate will install, configure and monitor Unix/Linux (RHEL) systems and specialist applications, troubleshoot issues across the environment, and contribute to the availability, security and performance of critical monitoring and threat-intelligence tools such as Splunk and MISP. This is a full-time, on-site, fixed-term assignment requiring NATO Secret clearance.

Role Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install and monitor Unix/Linux open-source operating systems and specific applications according to NCIRC NCSC standards
  • Resolve user issues, address change management requests, and implement protective and security measures
  • Contribute to a team responsible for the availability, scalability and performance of NCSC environment tools such as Splunk, MISP and others
  • Maintain and develop custom systems and tools to test, integrate, automate and monitor custom and commercial applications in the NCSC Linux environment
  • Support the initiation, preparation, follow-up and defence of specialist application upgrades before the Change Management Board
  • Assist in the rollout and deployment of new features and installations inside the NCIRC perimeter
  • Create and maintain documentation for configuration processes, policies and O&M Standard Operating Procedures, including testing strategies and results
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot Linux OS issues and their integration with the wider infrastructure (AD Domain, SSO, web solutions, log aggregation)
  • Generate solutions to complex problems within the NCSC environment and drive improvement processes to reduce incidents and outage time
  • Work with the Service Management team on Incident, Problem and Change Management procedures

Essential Skills, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, plus a minimum of 1 year of post-related experience
  • 1 year of experience with Linux server administration, including installation, configuration and maintenance, specifically on RHEL
  • Software engineering skills including programming and/or scripting knowledge
  • Experience with Ansible
  • Familiarity with virtualization technologies such as VMware
  • Understanding of security best practices and experience implementing security measures on Linux systems (firewalls, encryption, access control)
  • Current or former Red Hat certification(s); Administrator and Engineer certifications both held is preferred

Desirable

  • Experience with Red Hat Satellite and packaging
  • Good knowledge of observability practices
  • Experience with containerization tools such as Podman and Docker
  • Experience with Atlassian tools for tasks and documentation
  • Knowledge of on-premises virtualization (VMware a plus)
  • Participation in open-source community projects
  • Prior experience working in an international environment with both military and civilian elements
