Job Description Summary

Provides patient/family centered care, acting as partner and adviser, assists and supports patients and families to optimally manage their health care, respecting their culture and values, individual needs, health goals and treatment preferences. Applies critical reasoning and astute clinical judgment in order to expedite appropriate care and treatment, especially given that the patient may be present with complex problems or potentially life threatening conditions. Uses critical thinking in clinical problem-solving relative to the scope of practice, knowledge, competency, and experience. Assists medical staff with preparation, examination, and procedure to include interviewing/screening patients to obtain personal data and chief complaint, documentation for records, and vital signs. Performs telephone and in-person screenings. Participates in recording and reporting responsibilities; documents findings relevant to patients health care status or plan of care, documents accurately and consistently in accordance with approved policies/procedures. Prioritizes and documents patient incoming phone calls, as assigned, regarding medications, medical conditions, and reviews with provider as needed for orders or changes. Cleans and stocks examination rooms and/or other supply areas. Documents all patient care delivered in the medical record according to the medical center policy.

Job Description

Job Summary:

Serves as a working clinical support nurse for physicians and cancer center patients.  Participates in departmental quality improvement activities.

                                                             

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited LPN nursing program. Current licensure by the SC Board of Nursing at the LPN level. One year of any clinical experience working in a patient care environment, especially oncology patients. Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills communications skills.  Some knowledge of computer systems. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.

Work Environment:

Primarily works in a moderately traffic area with exposure to infectious disease and exposure to chemotherapeutic agents.  Subject to many interruptions.

             

Essential Functions:

• Assist in the data enter of patient’s lab, x-rays and ancillary orders has directed by physicians or nurse practitioner.
• Review computer/charts prior to patient’s appointment to ensure all documentation is correct (office notes, ancillary reports, pathology reports, etc.).
• Triage of patient concerns via telephone.
• Escort patients to examination rooms and prepare them for physician as needed.
• Schedule patient’s ancillary services as necessary.
• Review Router prior/after patient check-out to ensure all information and documentation is accurate and complete.
• Phone in prescriptions as needed and directed by physicians and/or clinical care coordinator.
• Give injections if necessary.
• Education/instruction and distribution of medical education materials to patients.
• Assists in other areas as necessary/needed.
• Performs other miscellaneous and related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of any job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to Stand, Walk, Sit, use your hands, reach, stoop, kneel, talk, hear and smell. Must be able to lift or exert energy up to 25 pounds 25% of the time and 50 pounds 25% of the time and up to 100 pounds 100% of the time.

Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less) is required. Must have color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors).  Must have depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances)

Mental Requirements:

Ability to read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical or technical procedures or regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondence and/or manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, patients, families, other employees, and medical staff.  Must have the ability to work with complex mathematical concepts related to probability, statistical interferences, and to apply these concepts to practical situations. 

Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to deal with concrete and abstract concepts and interpret verbal, nonverbal and written instructions is necessary.   

Age Groups:

This position primarily interacts with Adults and Aging Adults and provides direct patient care. All staff members must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area.
