Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for performing technical direct and indirect nursing care in a clinic, hospital, institution, or home setting for individuals under the supervision or direction of a registered nurse, licensed physician, or dentist. This includes taking temperatures, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, and various other technical nursing tasks in providing health care to patients and others.

Typical Functions

• Performs nursing procedures or specialized functions in accordance with knowledge, skills, and licensure.
• Participates in the evaluation of responses to interventions.
• Teaches basic nursing skills and related principles. Delegates nursing care tasks such as: taking temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, giving enemas, douches, and sitz baths, collecting specimens, and measuring intake and output.
• Assists in assessing, reporting, and recording health status of patients, families, and groups in a variety of settings.
• Participates in developing and implementing appropriate aspects of a plan of care.
• Administers medications as ordered.
• Reports appropriate patient information to supervisor or appropriate health team member.
• Serves as Charge Nurse on a unit, supervising staff performing medication administration and patient care.

Level Descriptor

Level I - This is the basic level of the job family where employees perform routine entry-level tasks under close professional supervision and in a training status to build their skills in providing nursing care as a licensed practical nurse.

Level II - This is the career level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibility for performing a full range of nursing assignments as a Licensed Practical Nurse and perform nursing tasks at the full performance level in providing care to patients or clients. Responsibilities will include providing guidance and training to others in completing routine nursing tasks and activities.

Education and Experience

Level I - Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of possession of a valid permanent Oklahoma license as a licensed practical nurse as approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing or, Licensed Practical Nurse License recognized by the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

Level II - Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of possession of a valid permanent Oklahoma license as a licensed practical nurse as approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing plus one year of practical nursing experience; or Licensed Practical Nurse License recognized by the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) plus one year of practical nursing experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Level I - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of nursing techniques, procedures, practices, and theory; of medical terminology; and of infection control measures.

Ability is required to exercise sound judgment; to follow detailed oral or written instructions; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Level II - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of nursing techniques, procedures, practices, and theory; of medical terminology; and of infection control measures.

Special Requirements

Additional Job Description

Position may be filled at Level I or II.

Position is located at Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee.

Essential Functions: Position provides direct and indirect nursing care for students in a school setting. The LPN works under the guidance of the supervising Registered Nurse and physicians to administer medications to students, follow physician directives, medical care plans, and protocol. Duties include administration and management of student medication (completes routine inventory of student meds, refill requests, notifies parents to ensure appropriate amounts are on hand); performs basic medical care and first-aid in non-emergency situations; conducts routine and emergency health assessments (vital signs, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature); demonstrates appropriate oral and written communication skills; serves as on-call nurse on rotation schedule; responds to calls in a timely manner; communicates pertinent information to parents, supervisor, and health team members; completes student health plans and medical summaries; completes and maintains student health information in charts; attends student field trips and extracurricular events as needed; willing and able to complete job-related travel; transport students in school vehicles.

Applicant must be willing to perform all job-related travel.

Trial period (if applicable) is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Current Licensed Practical Nurse licensure approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License. Knowledge and experience in diabetic care management is preferred but not required.
