Job Description:

This position provides anesthesia and anesthetic support for all clinical service areas, including Small Animal Internal Medicine, Small Animal Surgery, specialty small animal services, and all Large Animal clinical services while also providing leadership and support to full-time, part-time, and student technicians/assistants working within the area. Responsibilities include preparing and monitoring patients before, during, and after anesthesia; assisting faculty clinicians and house officers with anesthetic procedures; and ensuring the safe delivery of anesthesia in accordance with established hospital protocols. The individual must possess expertise in the safe handling and restraint of small animals and be able to provide instruction and guidance to veterinary students in anesthesia techniques, patient monitoring, and proper animal handling while fostering a safe and effective clinical learning environment. It is also essential that this person have demonstrated leadership skill and the ability to guide, motivate, and empower a team of people with varying experience and skill. 

Job Responsibilities:

30% - Perform and teach anesthetic induction, monitoring, recovery, airway management, catheter placement, regional anesthesia, and related procedures. Support faculty, house officers, and students in providing safe anesthesia and patient care. Assist with emergency patient assessment, stabilization, and anesthetic management.  Maintain working knowledge of anesthetic agents, monitoring techniques, equipment, and treatment protocols. Develop and maintain a working knowledge of sedatives, injectable and inhalant anesthetic agents, anesthetic equipment, multi-modal patient monitoring, diagnostic techniques, patient care practices, and treatment protocols in accordance with established hospital standards. 

30% - Perform and teach daily Anesthesia Service operations, including equipment use, patient monitoring, and clinical instruction of veterinary and veterinary technician students. Maintain the Anesthesia Service in a constant state of readiness by preparing and verifying anesthesia equipment, medications, monitoring devices, and emergency supplies for scheduled procedures and urgent cases. Ensure work areas are organized and stocked. Prepare equipment, medications, and emergency supplies for scheduled and urgent cases, including CPCR and other emergency interventions. Participate in clinical instruction by demonstrating anesthesia procedures, patient care techniques, and established treatment protocols while promoting safe, consistent, and effective clinical practices.

20% - Provide leadership and operational support to the anesthesia team. Collaborate with the supervisor and scheduler to address basic team concerns, coordinate workflow, facilitate breaks, oversee cases as needed, minimizing service delays. Perform basic equipment maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting. Maintain a shared equipment status log. Oversee cleaning protocols and inventory management. Assume basic scheduling responsibilities in the scheduler’s absence. Develop and implement onboarding and training plans for new technicians and house officers. Support ongoing technician skill development through clinical & skills-lab training

10% - Participate in the on-call rotation and respond to after-hours emergencies as assigned, including serving as essential personnel during holidays, emergency response, and ride-out operations.

10% - Other duties as assigned.  

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree; OR associate's degree in veterinary technology with 4 years' experience OR credentials as a vet tech or equivalent with 4 years' experience OR 7 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.  

Preferred Qualifications:

Actively licensed with the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Registered Veterinary Technician and five years of related experience. 

Special and Physical Qualifications:

Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and "on-call"/relief shifts.

Required to be capable of lifting 50+ pounds, standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the shoulder, vision near sight, vision far sight, climbing, crawling, twisting, pushing/pulling, grasping, and squatting.
