ROLE SUMMARY:

We are hiring a Lead Engineer to own the technical architecture and lead the team building LSEG's internal observability platform - a foundational opportunity to shape something that will be used across the business for years!

Our platform brings telemetry, dashboards, alerts, service health, and operational insight into one common experience. It is built on a modular, standards-based stack using OpenTelemetry, Cribl, ClickHouse, Grafana, and Redis, with integration points to Datadog, BigPanda, and other tooling where needed.

The focus of this role is technical direction and engineering quality - making foundational design decisions, leading design reviews, setting standards, and mentoring engineers. The platform needs to be modular, maintainable, and designed for long-term use across a global enterprise, and it is your job to make sure it gets built that way.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

Architecture and design:

- Own the technical architecture of the platform, including telemetry pipeline design, storage schema, API contracts, integration patterns, and multi-tenancy model.

- Lead technical design reviews and ensure key decisions are documented, reasoned, and communicated clearly to the team.

- Evaluate new components, integrations, or architectural patterns as the platform evolves and requirements change.

- Contribute to the platform roadmap, providing engineering input on feasibility, cost, risk, and sequencing.

Engineering delivery and quality:

- Work hands-on with platform stack components, including OpenTelemetry collectors, Cribl Stream, ClickHouse, Grafana, and Redis.

- Mentor and develop engineers on the team through code review, design collaboration, and ongoing technical guidance.

- Manage technical debt deliberately, track it transparently, and address it as part of regular delivery cycles.

Cross-functional collaboration:

- Partner with the Lead SRE to ensure reliability, resilience, and operational readiness are addressed at the design stage.

- Partner with the DevOps engineer to ensure the platform can be deployed, scaled, and updated reproducibly using GitOps and infrastructure-as-code practices.

- Represent engineering in cross-functional discussions with SRE, product, and business stakeholders.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

Essential skills and experience:

- Extensive experience in platform or backend engineering, with a track record of technical leadership on complex distributed systems.

- Deep hands-on experience with two or more of the following: OpenTelemetry, Cribl, ClickHouse, Grafana, Redis.

- Strong understanding of telemetry pipeline design, data storage at scale, and multi-tenant platform architecture.

- Experience leading design reviews, setting engineering standards, and maintaining code quality across a team.

- Infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform and familiarity with GitOps-based delivery practices.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for distributed, cross-timezone teams.

Desirable skills and experience:

- Experience designing internal developer-facing platforms or self-service tooling used by multiple engineering teams.

- Experience with API design, including REST or event-driven integration patterns.

- Experience building platforms that span cloud and on-premises environments.

- Familiarity with ClickHouse SQL, PromQL, or equivalent query languages for telemetry use cases.

- Experience in a regulated, financial services, or large enterprise technology environment.
