About Hauler Hero
Hauler Hero builds the operating system for residential and commercial waste haulers, including dispatch, routing, billing, payments, customer management, reporting, and the driver app that ties field operations together.
Our customers are private hauler owners, operators, and municipal waste leaders running essential services every day. Many are still managing their businesses through paper tickets, whiteboards, spreadsheets, disconnected systems, and legacy software. The result is missed revenue, messy routes, limited visibility, and too much time spent fighting fires instead of growing the business.
Today, we serve 240+ haulers across the country and are scaling quickly. We are a well-funded, fast-moving vertical SaaS company bringing modern software to an essential industry where the customer need is clear and the opportunity is large.
Role Summary
We are hiring a Lead Mobile Engineer (Contractor) to be the most senior engineer on our mobile team. Today we have a native Kotlin Android app; you will help evaluate Kotlin Multiplatform and lead the build-out of our first iOS app (iPad first, phones later) while strengthening the offline-first foundation across both platforms.
This is a hands-on role. You will write code daily, drive architectural decisions across iOS and Android, and mentor the mobile team. It requires strong technical judgment, comfort with ambiguity, and clear communication in a remote environment.
AI-First Engineering
We are intentionally building an AI-assisted engineering organization. AI tools are part of the daily workflow, not optional.
What this means in practice:
Daily use of tools such as Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot
AI-assisted implementation, refactoring, test generation, and boilerplate
You focus on architecture, edge cases, and quality
You review all AI-generated output with a trust-but-verify mindset
This role is not a fit for engineers who are resistant to AI-assisted development or who rely on AI output without understanding the code being produced.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the evaluation of Kotlin Multiplatform for sharing business logic across Android and iOS, and own the recommendation
Architect and build our first iOS app, targeting iPads used by drivers in the field
Contribute to and review work in our existing Kotlin Android app — shared architecture decisions serve both platforms
Strengthen offline-first architecture: local persistence, background sync, conflict resolution, and reliable photo capture/upload under poor connectivity
Work with maps, location, and in-app navigation in a location-heavy product
Set mobile engineering standards across iOS and Android through code reviews, architectural guidance, and mentorship
Collaborate closely with backend, design, product, and QA in a fast-moving startup environment
Required Qualifications
8+ years building production mobile applications, with deep iOS/Swift expertise
Working proficiency in Kotlin, with the ability to contribute to and review a production Android codebase
Hands-on Kotlin Multiplatform experience integrating shared code into native apps
Experience building offline-first mobile apps with real-time, two-way data sync
Experience with mapping SDKs and location-heavy applications
Experience leading or mentoring mobile engineers
Strong CI/CD experience for mobile, such as Fastlane, Bitrise, or GitHub Actions
Clear written and verbal communication in English; comfortable working async across time zones
Nice to Have
Deep Android production experience, including shipping and operating Android apps at scale
Firebase/Firestore
Camera, photo capture, or on-device vision/ML experience
Logistics, field service, or B2B SaaS background
What We Look For
Ownership: You take problems through to resolution and sweat the edge cases that matter in the field
Judgment: You weigh new technology critically — adopting KMP or not is a decision you will help make, not inherit
Communication: Proactive, clear, and async-friendly; missing context is surfaced, not assumed
Contractor and Location Notes
This is a contractor role, not full-time employment
Senior-level ownership and reliability are expected
This role is open to candidates located in Eastern Europe or LATAM
Consistent overlap with U.S. working hours is required
