The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) is offering a 10-12 week summer internship in the Washington D.C. metro area. This internship offers students the unique opportunity to better understand the intersection of U.S. dairy industry policy, regulatory affairs, and trade. Interns will have the opportunity to learn from NMPF’s expert staff, covering areas including government relations, regulatory affairs, trade, communications, membership services and the National Dairy FARM Program. Your efforts will shape the future of the dairy industry and contribute to pivotal policy efforts. Our interns play a crucial role in our mission, engaging in projects that not only challenge but also advance their professional and personal growth. Below are examples of what you could embark on:

  • Support our dynamic regulatory team, where you'll be at the forefront of critical nutrition, food safety and labeling initiatives. Your journey will involve in-depth research and collaborative editing of comments submitted to regulatory agencies. Through this, you'll master the art of clear, concise communication, learn to navigate complex topics, and develop a persuasive voice that champions the interests of NMPF members.
  • Extract key insights that will influence our strategic decisions. You'll gain knowledge in data analysis, learn to draw meaningful interpretations, and acquire the skill to present your findings compellingly to the team.
  • Crafting communications that resonate with our members. This will include everything from formulating insightful interview questions to converting interviews into engaging articles. You'll learn to distill complex policy topics, incorporate diverse feedback, and communicate effectively across various platforms.

This internship extends beyond specific projects, offering a holistic developmental journey. You'll enhance your ability to work collaboratively within a team, communicate effectively with leadership, juggle multiple projects with finesse, and expand your professional network. Furthermore, you'll dive into strategic thinking and learn the nuances of advocacy with a targeted goal in view.

Requirements

What you may do:

The intern will be actively involved in various activities and tasks, below are some examples of activities you may be involved in.

  • Perform daily office tasks & assist staff with cooperative membership interactions
  • Review, summarize and analyze federal registry notices and Congressional bills
  • Develop member-focused communications and educational resources
  • Assist with National Dairy FARM Program events and tasks
  • Develop one-pagers
  • Attend meetings and take notes on behalf of the organization

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled Junior, Senior or Graduate Degree student pursuing degrees in dairy, agriculture, food science, social responsibility, economics or related fields
  • Must be available and in D.C. for the duration of the internship
  • Must have excellent research, writing, and communication skills

ADVOCATING FOR DAIRY PRODUCERS AND THE COOPERATIVES THEY OWN

NMPF was organized in 1916 to provide a forum for dairy producers and the cooperatives they own to participate in public policy discussions. NMPF advocates policies to Congress, U.S. and foreign government agencies, industry organizations, the news media, and the public.

We use our unique resources to harness the ever-changing climate in the politics and marketing of milk and dairy products from farm to table to promote the economic well-being of dairy producers and their cooperatives through coordinated industry efforts.

NMPF addresses policies concerning milk pricing, domestic and international market development, agriculture credit and taxation, environmental issues, food safety and health, animal welfare, product standards and labeling, and research and biotechnology.

Our mission is to foster an economic and political climate in which dairy producers and the cooperatives they own can thrive and prosper. Achieving such success assures consumers of adequate supplies of wholesome and nutritious dairy products at affordable prices.
