About this Instructor General Application role at Mission Bit

About Mission Bit

Mission Bit is a San Francisco-based nonprofit that equips youth with hands-on computer science and AI education that builds confidence, technical skills, and pathways to meaningful careers in technology. We serve public high school students who've historically had limited access to tech and tech careers through semester-long coding courses, self-paced learning, workshops, and more.

Overview

Every semester, Mission Bit seeks talented and passionate instructors to mentor, support, and uplift the next generation — empowering youth through hands-on computer science education. We have three student-facing instructional roles: In-school Instructor, Lead Instructor, and Teaching Assistant (TA). All roles are highly visible, work directly with students, and are essential to delivering Mission Bit's project-based computer science curriculum.

Our instructors teach a variety of introductory coding courses: Web Design (HTML/CSS, UI/UX Design), Game Design (Unity/C#), VR (Meta Quest/Unity/C#), Python, and AI. We're proud to provide training to all instructional staff before the semester begins, along with ongoing support throughout the course. If you have a passion for community, social justice, education, and coding, and want to uplift high school youth and bridge the tech divide, this might be the opportunity for you!

By completing this general application, our team will reach out with opportunities that align with your experience and interests.

Hiring Cycles

This is a general application. We review applications and match candidates to open positions across three hiring cycles per year:

  1. Spring cycle: October - January
  2. Summer cycle: February - June
  3. Fall cycle: July - August

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis within each hiring cycle listed above, and our team will follow up if there's a match to a role.

Roles and responsibilities

All roles work with high school students ages 14–18.

In-school Instructor:

  • Plan and lead engaging community-building games and activities
  • Effectively manage classroom behavior and routines to maintain a safe, productive learning environment for all students throughout the day
  • Collaborate closely with the partner school's teacher of record and other instructional staff, attend weekly staff meetings, and help suggest and implement ideas that improve the quality of Mission Bit's curriculum and program
  • Keep students, families, Program Staff, and the Education Program Manager informed on course and student progress throughout the school year

Lead Instructor:

  • Create an inclusive, community-based classroom culture rooted in Mission Bit's core values of social justice, community, accountability, smart risks, and love
  • Prepare and facilitate 2-3 lessons per week using Mission Bit's in-house project-based curriculum, adjusting to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners
  • Foster individual and meaningful relationships with students, and guide them toward building a final project they can proudly showcase at Demo Day
  • Collaborate closely with your TA and other instructional staff, attend weekly staff meetings, and help suggest and implement ideas that improve the quality of Mission Bit's curriculum and program
  • Keep students, families, and Program Staff informed on course and student progress throughout the semester

Teaching Assistant (TA):

  • Plan and lead engaging community-building games and activities
  • Foster individual and meaningful relationships with students, promote positive and productive collaboration between them, and effectively manage classroom behavior to support a productive learning environment
  • Ensure students receive the support they need to confidently showcase a capstone project at Demo Day, and step in to lead class when the Lead Instructor is out
  • Collaborate with the Lead Instructor and other instructional staff, attend weekly staff meetings, and keep students, families, and Program Staff informed on progress

Schedule

Both roles are seasonal and part-time, generally following the academic semester tied to each hiring cycle above. Specific weekly hours, class days/times, training dates, and site locations vary by cohort and will be confirmed with matched candidates once classes are identified.
