About this HEOP/ULC Tutor role at The New School

The New School · Onsite · U - 63 Fifth Avenue

This tutor role would support collaborative efforts between The University Learning Center (ULC) and The New School Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) to provide tailored support to students through one-on-one tutoring, skill-building workshops, and other resources. The ULC is dedicated to providing academic support to The New School’s diverse student population through one-on-one tutoring sessions, workshops, and more. Tutors help students become stronger and more independent learners, so that they succeed in achieving their academic goals. HEOP is a partnership between the New York State Education Department and The New School. This program is designed for students with the potential and drive to further their education but, due to limited academic and financial resources, would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. The goal of HEOP is to retain and graduate talented students who will succeed at the college level and beyond.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary tutor for the HEOP Program, assisting students with a variety of writing projects and general academic skill-building, including presentations and time management (training provided). Writing assistance may include brainstorming topics, identifying questions students hope to answer, developing outlines, formulating and strengthening arguments, revising drafts at various stages of development, properly citing sources and understanding plagiarism avoidance, including responsible AI use, as well as cover letters, resumes, personal statements, theses, dissertations, and research proposals. There may also be opportunities to provide art and design feedback, which students may request based on the tutor’s areas of expertise.

  • In addition to working with students in the HEOP program, this role would also lead writing and time management tutoring sessions for other undergraduate and students who visit the ULC.

  • Help students develop their academic skills and increase their awareness of additional university resources, connecting students to other departments when necessary.

  • Develop and lead skill-building workshops and other programming and resources, including study halls and informational handouts.

  • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences.

  • Complete administrative tasks, such as writing brief descriptions of each session and emailing a brief summary of daily attendance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Tutors must be currently enrolled in a relevant program at The New School and have at least one year of tutoring experience or teaching writing/English in a formal academic setting.

  • Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Demonstrated reliability and punctuality

  • Able to commit to 6 (or more) tutoring hours per week

  • Experience working with students with ADHD a plus

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Federal Work Study preferred

  • Experience working with ESL and first generation students strongly preferred

Work Mode: In-person #LI-DNI

Hourly Rate: $29.20/hr through October 31 (new pay rate will be determined by next collective bargaining agreement)

Special Instruction: Please send at least one faculty recommendation to [email protected].

Responsibilities:

Tutors help students become stronger and more independent learners, so that they succeed in achieving their academic goals.
