About this Head of Finance role at M-KOPA

M-KOPA · Onsite · Kenya

Head of Finance, M-KOPA Mobility

You've raised the capital. You've owned the plan. You've stood in front of investors with your numbers and watched them hold. You're accomplished, you're respected, and you're probably happy where you are. But when did you last get to build the financial engine of a business that is still deciding how big it can become?

Where M-KOPA is right now

M-KOPA now serves 10 million customers, a milestone we reached this year, and we're already looking to the next 10 million. We have unlocked $2+ billion in credit for people the formal financial system overlooked. 86% of our customers report an improved quality of life, 70% use what they finance to earn an income, and 55% are accessing formal financial services for the first time. Behind those numbers are 2,300+ employees, 35,000 agents, $45 million contributed in taxes, and 2 million smartphones assembled in Kenya.

Why you're seeing us hire across the business

If you've noticed several M-KOPA roles appearing lately, that is deliberate. Doubling from 5 million customers to 10 million in under two years, and now adding around 10,000 a day, requires infrastructure built ahead of demand, not after it. We are placing senior leaders at the points where the next phase of growth will either accelerate or stall. Finance in Mobility is one of those points.

Why this seat is different

M-KOPA Mobility finances e-motorbikes for riders who earn their living on them. More than 4,000 are already on the road, saving riders $5.62 a day. It is an early-stage business unit with the autonomy to move quickly on a young, shifting market, sitting inside a Group that provides the accounting backbone, the policies and the controls.

That combination is rare. Your current role probably means inheriting a model someone else built and defending assumptions you didn't choose. This role means you own the Mobility financial model outright, and it becomes the single source of truth for planning, capital raising and every major decision. You will sit on the Mobility Leadership Team and be the first call from the Managing Director, the General Manager and the Head of Portfolio when a question has money in it.

What you'll bring

  • Seasoned finance leadership in a fast-growing, capital-intensive or lending business, including a proven track record of raising debt or equity from building the model and materials, through due diligence, to close.

  • Demonstrable experience owning a business plan and budget and holding reported numbers to it in front of leadership and investors, with reporting that meets Group policy and Big 4 audit standards, ideally within a multi-entity group.

  • Established expertise working with credit or risk teams to reconcile priced risk against actual portfolio performance, alongside a record of leading teams and influencing decisions well beyond your own function.

What the work looks like

Your Monday might start inside the monthly close with Group Finance, interrogating the Mobility management accounts until you trust every line. By Wednesday you're in a working session with the Managing Director on capital structure: how much debt, how much equity, and in what sequence. Thursday you're reconciling credit loss and recovery numbers with the Head of Portfolio so that the risk we priced and the risk we report agree. Friday you're walking an investor or lender through portfolio performance, with answers ready for the questions they haven't asked yet.

Across the year, your remit covers three areas:

  • Capital and investor confidence: shaping capital strategy with the Managing Director, owning the financial model, and leading due diligence preparation so that every request is answered accurately and on time.

  • Performance and planning: owning the annual plan, budget and financial targets, running the monthly business performance reviews, and bringing the unit economics to every pricing, retention and new-market investment decision.

  • Treasury and procurement: forecasting cash and funding needs with Group Treasury, and leading the procurement team to set purchasing policy and approval limits that keep Group controls intact while letting Mobility buy at the speed its growth demands.

You will also build the finance systems and reporting for the unit from the ground up, and prepare the financial content of the board pack so that Mobility and Group tell one consistent story.

The reality check

This role is demanding. Mobility is early stage, the market is moving, and you will be asked to be rigorous and fast at the same time. You will serve every Mobility market from a central seat, hold a Big 4 audit standard while the business changes shape around you, and make recommendations on capital that shape the company for years. If you've raised money and held a plan to account, you're probably ready for exactly this.

Let's talk

If you read this and felt a small pull toward the part where you build the model rather than inherit it, that's probably worth a conversation. No commitment, no pressure. Ready to build the financial engine behind Africa's e-mobility shift? Let's talk.
