Graduate Assistant (GA) – Behavioral Intervention Team

The Graduate Assistant (GA) supports the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) in promoting a safe, supportive, and inclusive campus environment. The GA assists with the identification, documentation, review, and follow-up of behavioral concerns involving students and helps the team coordinate appropriate resources and interventions.

This position provides an opportunity to gain experience in behavioral assessment, case management, student support, threat assessment, crisis response, interdisciplinary collaboration, and higher education student affairs.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist the BIT with reviewing and organizing reports of concerning or disruptive student behavior.
  • Support the collection, organization, and documentation of information relevant to behavioral intervention cases.
  • Conduct appropriate research and background information gathering under the direction of professional staff.
  • Assist with case tracking, database management, records maintenance, and preparation of case materials.
  • Participate in BIT meetings and contribute information and observations within the scope of the GA role.
  • Assist with follow-up communications and resource coordination for students, faculty, staff, and other campus partners, as directed.
  • Help identify appropriate campus and community resources to support students experiencing academic, personal, behavioral, or other challenges.
  • Assist with outreach, education, and prevention initiatives related to behavioral concerns, safety, mental health, and student well-being.
  • Support the development of presentations, educational materials, reports, and other BIT resources.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality and handle sensitive information in accordance with university policies and applicable laws.
  • Collaborate professionally with departments such as Student Affairs, Counseling/Wellness Services, Campus Safety, Academic Affairs, Residence Life, and other relevant partners.
  • Assist with assessment and evaluation of BIT programs, processes, and outcomes.
  • Perform other duties related to behavioral intervention and student support as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Enrollment in a graduate program at the university or an appropriately related institution.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Ability to manage sensitive information professionally and appropriately.
  • Proficiency with standard office and computer applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate study in counseling, social work, psychology, higher education/student affairs, public health, criminology/criminal justice, education, or a related field.
  • Experience working with college students or in a higher education setting.
  • Experience with case management, behavioral intervention, crisis response, threat assessment, or student support.
  • Familiarity with behavioral intervention, CARE teams, threat assessment, or multidisciplinary case review processes.
  • Experience maintaining confidential records or working with case-management systems.
  • Training or experience in conflict resolution, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed practices, or related areas.

Supervision and Training

The GA will receive regular supervision and training from the BIT professional staff. Training may include behavioral intervention processes, case documentation, confidentiality, threat assessment principles, crisis response protocols, university policies, referral procedures, and appropriate boundaries for the GA role.

The GA will not independently conduct threat assessments, make emergency decisions, or provide clinical services unless specifically authorized, trained, and supervised by appropriately qualified university personnel.
