Job Description:

I. Position Summary:

The Geriatric Psychiatry nurse practitioner provides psychiatric consultation and ongoing psychiatric treatment for the long-term chronic care, post-acute, and assisted living programs at one or more venues within Hebrew SeniorLife.  This position may also involve participation in nurse practitioner teaching opportunities.

 II. Core Competencies:

III. Position Responsibilities:

  • Provides psychiatric consultation as requested by primary care teams in the long-term chronic care, post-acute, and assisted living settings.
  • Performs emergency psychiatric consultation when indicated and assists with assuring patients’ safe disposition.
  • Recommends medication and treatment regimens as appropriate to assessed psychiatric conditions
  • Makes recommendations regarding referrals to other specialists and to members of multidisciplinary team to help meet each patient’s individual needs.
  • Follows established department policies, procedures and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards
  • Documents patient visits within a timely manner (typically within same day) using the appropriate medical record system
  • Using electronic charge capture system, or other established process, submits charges for each patient visit within 72 hours of completing the visit
  • Meets productivity benchmarks as established by Department of Medicine Administration
  • Participates in on-call coverage as appropriate
  • Participates in staff education and support as appropriate
  • Trains and supervises nurse practitioner students as appropriate
  • Participates in Medical staff quality improvement and review activities
  • Attends Medical Staff meetings
  • Represents the Department of Medicine in HSL committees as appropriate
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

IV Qualifications

     Education: Awarded a Master’s, Post-Master’s or Doctoral (DNP/PhD) degree from a graduate program fully accredited by CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA.

    Certification:

  • Advanced Practice Registered Nursing (APRN) authorization from the MA Board of Registration in Nursing.
  •     APRN Independent Prescriptive Authority

      Licensure

  •   Active and unrestricted Massachusetts RN License.  Must maintain Massachusetts bi-annual continuing education contact hours requirements.
  •     Active and unrestricted Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration (MCSR)
  •     Federal DEA Registration with authorization to prescribe Schedules II-V substances.

·       Experience:

  • Experience, preferably 2 years or more, caring for seniors as a geriatric psychiatry NP in long term chronic care, community or home settings.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards
  • Knowledge of community medical diagnostic and patient care services in area of medical expertise
  • Experience working both independently and in a team environment
  • Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis and treatment
  • Ability to supervise, advise and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise
