The role – what you’ll do

Barr is seeking a senior geoenvironmental engineer with experience in tailings management to join our Calgary office. This person will undertake challenging and progressive work focused on large-scale tailings management field programs and associated engineering analysis and design for complex projects with industrial clients in the oil sands and/or other mining industries.

Project work will include providing project management and technical leadership on large-scale tailings management field programs; conducting tailings studies and assessments; managing and providing technical leadership for engineering studies and multidisciplinary design projects (including conceptual, feasibility, front-end, and detailed design stages); regular client communication and interface; working with clients and staff to prepare plans and execution strategies; preparing cost estimates; preparing formal proposals; writing and managing delivery of technical reports; participating in business development initiatives and client management; mentoring junior staff; and performing other duties as assigned by the company. While the position is located in Calgary, periodic travel is required.

The ideal candidate for this position is a clear and confident communicator who thrives in collaborative and independent settings. They are strategic, adaptable, and proactive, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills that support sound decision-making in complex situations. They bring a high level of ownership and accountability to their work, with the ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining a focus on quality and detail. They anticipate potential project issues and risks and are able to implement robust mitigation strategies. This individual demonstrates strong leadership and mentoring capabilities, actively supports the growth of team members, and builds lasting client relationships rooted in trust and service. Above all, they value teamwork, integrity, and delivering impactful, forward-thinking environmental solutions.

Your impact – key responsibilities

  • Project management: oversee and lead multidisciplinary teams; manage scopes, schedules, and budgets; and help ensure project quality, safety, and performance standards are consistently met. Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff as part of project execution.

  • Technical knowledge: lead and provide technical oversight for complex geoenvironmental engineering projects. Apply deep expertise in tailings management, sediment transport and solid‑water interactions, mine waste, mine water management, and reclamation and closure planning. Design and execute field investigation programs and develop technically sound, defensible analyses and designs that comply with applicable environmental regulations and industry standards.

  • Business development: support and contribute to business development efforts by identifying new opportunities, leading and participating in proposal development, and strengthening long‑term client relationships. Apply technical credibility and industry knowledge to support client discussions, project planning, and solution development. Participate in professional organizations, conferences, and networking activities to help grow Barr’s geoenvironmental and mining‑related services and market presence.

  • Problem solving: evaluate site conditions, large and varied data sets, and evolving regulatory and stakeholder requirements to develop practical, compliant, and innovative engineering solutions. Anticipate technical, regulatory, logistical, and seasonal challenges associated with field programs and project execution and adapt approaches as needed to meet project and client needs throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Communication: develop high-quality technical deliverables and clear, concise reports. Communicate complex technical information effectively to clients, regulators, and diverse internal and external audiences through presentations, meetings, and written documentation.

  • Interpersonal savvy: build and sustain strong relationships with clients, regulatory personnel, and internal teams. Collaborate across disciplines to align technical approaches with client goals while contributing to a positive, inclusive team culture.

About the opportunity

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Calgary, Alberta, office.

  • Work environment: ability to work in locations that may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.

About you – required core competencies

  • Education: bachelor’s degree in mining, geological, geotechnical, environmental, civil engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Experience: 10 or more years of relevant experience.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship from Barr Ltd., now or in the future.

  • Master’s degree in geoenvironmental or mining engineering or a related discipline.

  • Demonstrated project management and leadership skills and experience related to client management and interfacing as well as directing and mentoring junior professional staff.

  • Knowledge and experience in fluid fine tailings management within the oil sands industry and mine waste management.

  • Knowledge and experience of industrial processes such as mining and/or minerals processing.

  • Experience with business development or marketing of professional services.

  • Previous consulting experience.

Compensation: Anticipated range of 120,000 - 170,000 CAD annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance.
