POSITION OVERVIEW

A Fuel Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of fuel storage and dispensing systems. In this role, you’ll work hands-on with underground and above-ground tanks, pumps, dispensers, and monitoring systems to ensure safe and reliable operation. As a key part of the fuel operations team, you will support compliance with all regulatory and environmental standards while minimizing downtime and maximizing efficiency across all assigned locations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following and other duties may be assigned as necessary:

  • Performs scheduled and emergency maintenance on fuel dispensers, tank monitors, submersible pumps, and associated systems.
  • Installs, tests, and calibrates fuel equipment and system components in accordance with manufacturer and company specifications.
  • conduct leak detection, line testing, and tank inspections to ensure compliance with EPA and state regulations.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs electrical and mechanical issues related to fuel systems.
  • Completes service orders (SWOs), maintenance logs, and regulatory documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Responds to fuel alarms, spill events, or equipment failures to minimize environmental and operational impact.
  • Works with site personnel to instruct them on the proper use and care of fuel equipment.
  • Assists in equipment upgrades and system retrofits.
  • Maintains parts inventory, tools, and service vehicle in a clean and organized manner.
  • Ensures all work is performed safely and in compliance with company, local, and federal standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not typically have direct supervisory responsibilities but may mentor junior technicians or assist in training new team members as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school certification preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in fuel systems maintenance, petroleum equipment service, or a related technical field.
  • Familiarity with dispensers, tank monitors, submersible pumps, and vapor recovery systems.
  • Proficiency with digital multimeters and other diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Experience working with fuel monitoring systems (e.g., Veeder-Root, Incon) is preferred.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to work independently in a field-based environment.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must meet all state and federal licensing requirements for fuel system service work.
  • UST Operator Class A/B certification preferred or must be obtained based on jurisdiction.
  • Manufacturer certifications for fuel equipment (Gilbarco, Wayne, Veeder-Root, etc.) preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain required work cards or permits (e.g., Health Card, Safety Card, Non-Gaming Card, if applicable).

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, safety documents, and regulatory compliance materials. Must be able to write service reports and communicate effectively with team members and site staff in English.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply logic and technical knowledge to diagnose issues, implement solutions, and follow written and verbal instructions. Must be able to respond to emergencies and problem-solve in real-time under pressure.

  • Primarily field-based work at outdoor fueling sites.
  • Exposure to flammable materials, fuels, fumes, and mechanical equipment.
  • Work in varying weather conditions and around active vehicle traffic.
  • May involve entering confined spaces and using safety harnesses or other protective gear.

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and crouch for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity to use hand tools, diagnostic devices, and equipment.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work in underground sumps, and access tanks.
  • Must be able to drive to various service locations throughout the workday.
