Position Description:

The Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) Guidance, Navigation and Mission Analysis team is a high-performing group executing challenging tasks to design, integrate, and evaluate systems for NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS). We are searching for a highly qualified candidate to support NASA’s Flight Mechanics and Mission Analysis teams at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). This exciting work will serve as a critical step in sending humans back to the Moon, Mars, and beyond!

Job Functions:

• Develop, maintain, and evaluate 6-DOF (Degrees of Freedom) simulation models for launch vehicles or missile systems.
• Perform flight mechanics and trajectory analysis using advanced simulation tools.
• Execute Monte Carlo and statistical analyses to assess vehicle performance, margins, and robustness.
• Validate simulation models and assess vehicle dynamics across various flight regimes.
• Build and improve standalone analysis tools to evaluate vehicle system performance.

Qualifications

Education:

• A degree from an ABET-accredited institution in Aerospace Engineering (AE) is required. (A related field may be considered if combined with highly applicable experience).
• Educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS with 5 to 10 years of experience. A Master’s Degree in an applicable field is equivalent to approximately two (2) years of experience.

Experience:

• Required: 5 to 10 years of relevant professional experience.
• Required: Extensive experience in 6-DOF modeling and simulation of missile systems or launch vehicles.
• Required: Strong proficiency and experience in C programming.
• Desired: Experience performing Monte Carlo and statistical analyses.
• Required: Must possess strong technical initiative and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Job Requirement:

• Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.

Duties

Day-to-day activities include:

• Creating, editing, and debugging simulation software written in C.
• Running 6-DOF simulations, interpreting results, and troubleshooting anomalies.
• Working independently to solve complex flight mechanics problems while collaborating with Guidance, Navigation and Mission Analysis leads and other engineering disciplines when required.
• Creation and review of engineering and software documentation.
• Preparing and presenting technical reports and briefings.

Work Environment:

• Office environment onsite MSFC (>90%).
• Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate, and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Strong presentation and communication skills are required.
• Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and customers (100%).
• Requires travel in the domestic USA (<5%).
• Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (>80%).

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%).  Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday.  Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
